Messi today travels to China to play with Argentina

The Argentinian Lionel Messi will today bound for Beijing to play the Olympics with the selection of his country, but Barcelona still fighting and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS, for its acronym in Spanish) will have the final say.

The club will submit an appeal to the CAS after knowing the decision yesterday of Interacional Federation of Football Association (Fifa) forcing the club to release Messi to participate in the Olympiad.

"I joined the selection without waiting, because if I would be late. At the moment I want to be with them, "he said.

Although that is also added at the expense of the opinion that the CAS and will return if necessary.

The Status Committee Athlete of the Fifa ordered the release of players younger than 23 years for the Olympic Games.

The single judge of the Commission, the Tunisian Slim Aloulou, dismissed the arguments of Werder Bremen, Schalke 04 and Barcelona, who argued that the Olympic tournament coincides with tournaments like the Champions League.

"The Olympic Games represent a unique opportunity for athletes from any sport and, therefore, could not be justified that prevents any player younger than 23 years participate in this event," reads the provision.

However, Barcelona remains steadfast in its initial position and wants to prevent the march from their franchise player.
Barcelona will present an appeal against this decision before the CAS and request its cancellation.

Yesterday, Barça won by 3-1 to Fiorentina and Messi played again as the holder.
Precisely, the Argentine was one of the players in the first goal of Barcelona, which came at 28 minutes. Messi made a great move that ended with a staff auction close by Carlos Puyol.
Messi will travel accompanied by Pep Costa, a member of the body coach, who remain in China until the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) delivers its verdict on the appeal lodged by Barcelona.

That's because unlike Barcelona, Werder Bremen seems to be about to abandon the struggle for Diego, who joined without permission from his club to play Brazil for the Olympic tournament in Beijing.

Bremen's sports director, Klaus Allofs, admitted: "We must see whether it is worthwhile to maintain the appeal. Do not keep a mere diversion, we would have to make sure our line. "
For the moment, Laporta relaxed position to lower tensions.

"What we can not do is harm the interests of the player having a resolution through. We understand that power is very complex and retain the player who participates in the tour of the United States.
"If the CAS fails in favour of the club, he would have to come back," summed up the Catalan jerarca.

The CAS will resolve on Tuesday.
For his part, head coach of the Olympic selection argentina, Sergio Batista and confessed his relief already outlined how it wishes to play: "Fortunately it was resolved in our favour after so many return trips.

"I want Messi will pull over to the medium, not stuck to the line as it does in Barcelona. To generate football in front of (Juan Roman) Riquelme and behind (Sergio) Agüero, "said the Chechen.

The U.S. economy advanced in the first quarter

Economic growth accelerated in the second quarter, when tax refunds gave a ball oxygen to consumers and exports have improved the balance sheet of enterprises. But withdrawals led to a period of contraction in late 2007.

The Commerce Department said on Thursday that the gross domestic product grew at an annual rate of 1.9% in the quarter from April to June. It was an improvement over the weak growth of 0.9% achieved in the first quarter of the year and a real contraction in the last 2007.

In addition, the Labour Department also reported on Thursday that layoffs increased markedly last week. New claims for unemployment insurance rose to 448,000, the highest level in five years.
The weak job market has kept wage pressures at bay. Meanwhile, wages and benefits to unemployed American workers increased by 0.7% in the second quarter, the same growth the previous quarter. It was the best in two years, the department said in another report.

The rebound in the second quarter was not as robust as had been expected by economists, who had predicted an expansion of 2.4%. That surge surely will not be considered a sign of economic recovery. There are fears that as they shut down the impact of tax refunds, the economy might have marked another setback later this year.

The Wall Street investors were not pleased with these reports and the stock market started the day with widespread casualties.

The health of the U.S. economy is the greatest public concern and therefore of politicians including those candidates who aspire to the White House.

The GDP contracted at an annual rate of 0.2% in the last three months of 2007, according to annual revisions disseminated by the government.

The contraction reflects the largest contraction in 26 years in the business of building and the prudence of consumers frightened by all these symptoms.

The contraction in the fourth quarter was the worst from occurring in the third quarter of 2001, the last time the economy fell into a recession. The government estimates that the economic performance of the last quarter of last year was positive-though minimum-digit growth of just 0.6%.

The GDP measures the value of all goods and services produced in the United States and is the best barometer of the country's economic health.

Joan Laporta, Barcelona's president, confirmed the decision in Florence, where the team today an amicable dispute before the Fiorentina: "At this stage we are in a situation of 'deadlock'.

Today we will meet with Messi for deciding that most suitable to both sides. I understand that our performance is very respectable from a sporting and whether the resolution of TAS (CAS) is favorable will have to accept our claims ".
It was a way of alerting Messi that the player will have to abide by the final resolution of the case, which will dictate the CAS, even though the footballer today also expressed their desire is to join the selection argentina.

"I joined the selection without waiting because if I would be late. At the moment I want to be with them, "he said. Although that is also added at the expense of the opinion that the CAS and will return if necessary.

Fifa requires teams to release players for Beijing Games

The Fifa insisted on Wednesday that clubs must allow the participation of their players younger than 23 years in the Olympic Games in Beijing, paving the way for the Argentine Lionel Messi and Brazilians Diego and Rafinha attending the tournament.
The clubs of the players - Barcelona, Werder Bremen and Schalke - refused to assign arguing that the Olympic tournament is not a matter for the Fife and therefore the lead agency can not force them to bring those elements.

It is foreseeable that clubs now have recourse to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which should act in the coming days as the Olympic soccer boots on August 7, a day before the official opening of the games. An emergency committee on Tuesday confirmed the validity of the position it took on the Fife from the outset.

Slim Aloulou, Tunisian judge that integrates the committee of the statute of the Fifa player, said on Wednesday that the transfer of players under 23 years requested by their selections is compulsory for all clubs.
Participating in the Olympic Games is a unique opportunity for athletes of all disciplines, said the FIF in a statement. There would be justified to prevent a player younger than 23 years participating in a competition of this kind if his team has been graded. Barcelona and Schalke have games in the preliminary stage of the Champions League which coincide with the dispute of the Olympic tournament. Those two clubs Werder Bremen and argued that the Olympic tournament is not included in the calendar of Fifa, which replied that his schedule includes only the parties of the largest selections, with players without age limit.

The Olympic tournament dates are set by the International Olympic Committee. Immediately, Barcelona announced it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to seek annulment of the verdict of Fife as quickly as possible. Schalke and Werder already filed his appeal. At this stage we are in a situation of impasse. Today we will meet with Messi for deciding that most suitable to both sides.

I understand that our performance is very respectable from the field of sport and if the judgement is in favour of TAS will have to accept our claims, in Florence said the president of Barsa, Joan Laporta. The manager stated that Barsa not want to harm Messi, so the norm is now going to play with Argentina, but if the failure to TAS (please) the club would have to return. Messi had planned to travel to the United States if there was not a situation like the current one. What we can not do is harm the interests of the player having a resolution through, Laporta added.
We understand that power is very complex and retain the player who participates in the tour of the United States. Messi will do dictate the rules and understand that they will be interpreted by the TAS favourably to the positions of Barsa. The coach of Argentina, Sergio Batista, applauded the decision and indicated that Messi will travel to China on Wednesday after fogueo of Barsa against Fiorentina in Italy. He is a player we need is within the campus.

Fortunately it was resolved in our favour after so many comings and goings and problemitas, Batista told Radio Del Plata from Japan, where his team played a friendly on Tuesday. The people of the AFA sent him passages and after the match in Florence is traveling to Shanghai, he added. Laporta also sharpening their guns toward the Argentine football associations by the pressure exerted in the case Messi.
The AFA has pressed hard to go to the player (the Games). It seems to me unfair and misplaced, because we are not talking about the selection Absolute. This is an Olympic tournament, that does not meet all the players eligible, but that is amateur spirit. It makes no sense that the Games will become a new World Cup, he said.

The clubs had so far accepted yield to players younger than 23 years since it came into force this method 20 years ago. This is the first time that some institutions are reluctant.

Favre expected to submit letter of reinstatement to NFL

During a telephone conversation Thursday with Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson, quarterback Brett Favre conveyed he is planning to return to the team and report to training camp this weekend.

If he follows through on his plans, Favre is expected to fax a letter seeking reinstatement to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell as early as Friday, before the Packers report to camp on Saturday.

However, just because Favre is now planning to return to the Packers, that doesn't mean the saga is over. This is a story that has had so many twists and turns, it is conceivable it could change again. It has repeatedly in the four months since Favre announced his retirement.

At any point this summer, with the situation as tenuous as it is, Favre still could decide to walk away from the game again or Green Bay could decide to trade him to one of the teams it spoke with this week. But for now, Favre is planning to go back to the Packers with the intention of spending this season with them.

There is plenty of smoothing over to be done, however that process already has kicked off. The conversation between Favre and Thompson was said to be cordial and professional, and the Packers recognize that they are a better team with their iconic quarterback on the roster.

Thompson even said during Thursday's annual shareholders meeting that families have disagreements, but they overcome them. Now the Packers and Favre are trying to do just that.

Favre will try to return to the life that he has known and loved in Green Bay. He never sold his house there, never removed the furniture from the house, never moved his cars from the area.

But there will be an adjustment on the football field. The Packers had appointed Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback and Favre will have to beat him out this summer, an idea once as unthinkable as Favre being traded. With a base salary of $12 million, Favre could become the most expensive backup in the history of football.

Barça challenged FIFA

Yesterday, F. C. Barcelona confirmed its arguments as to why it believes is not required to divest to striker Lionel Messi for Argentina to participate in the Olympic Games in Beijing, thus ignoring the criterion of FIFA.

The club Barca received through the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) circular number 1,153 of FIFA, where its president, Joseph Blatter reiterated the obligation to release players under the age of 23 years for Olympics Based on customary law.

"In reply, Barcelona has ratified the content of his earlier writings, in the sense that the rules apply FIFA does not oblige clubs," says the Spanish entity said in a statement.
"The club has reiterated the proposal for a consensus solution that was rejected in its day by the football associations of Argentina (AFA)," he added.

In short: Messi continues-to-disgust with the concentration that the team is doing in the Scottish town of Saint Andrews.

In addition, Barcelona also said that only recognizes a valid interlocutor, the AFA, which continues negotiations.

However, according to the latest information, the positions of both sides are completely separate.
Thus, the Barcelona Messi will not be asked to join the selection until after the August 12, when the team Spanish first match of the dispute prior to the Champions League.

The problem for Argentina is that by then the tournament would have already begun.
The AFA argues that the player wants now, without further delay, invoking the arguments of FIFA. Precisely, this is the last point of conflict, since Barcelona has challenged strongly with total orders of FIFA, who is not accustomed to such pulses.

Meanwhile, Messi continues cabizbajo in Scotland, wishing a resolution allowing it to play games with Argentina.

I love this championship and had done well here," said Federer, twice champion at the Masters Series Canada, visibly affected by their tenth defeat in the season and his Early elimination of Toronto.

Since 2002 totaled ten
Federer did not fall the same year, and still needed to close a 2008 in which the Swiss ceased to function as a "relojito", even at Wimbledon, where two and a half weeks ago lost his final battle with Nadal in five sets. Faced with the number 22 ranking Simon, Federer committed four errors forced non-consecutive all a sign of its downturn-and French took advantage of his first match point after two hours imposed by 2-6, 7-5 and 6-4.
"It's important to stay positive. I must join forces and look to the Olympics and the U.S. Open. That's really what I want to win. I must make sure it is ready for that," he tried to comfort the once invincible Federer.

The permanence of Federer on top of the tennis world is in real danger. The Swiss last year was a finalist in Canada, so it will lose many points, although not until August, because due to the Beijing Games in 2008 the tournament was ahead of Toronto. The same is true of the Masters Series in Cincinnati, where Federer will defend the title.

Nadal was semifinalist last year in Montreal and Cincinnati was eliminated in the debut, so if far-reaching and the Swiss does a good tournament on U.S. soil-the Spanish could travel to Beijing as a virtual world number one, and what would be officially from August 18.

Federer has not fallen from the top ranking since February 2, 2004, and until this week ahead by 770 points to Nadal and Djokovic by 1,655. For the former German star Boris Becker no doubts: Nadal is already the best but still the numbers reflect. "In the ranking, there is a number one Federer name. But I think in the world of tennis you can ask anyone who it is: the winner of the French Open and Wimbledon," said Becker on Monday, before Federer again to experience the bitter taste of defeat.

Located at the Soho Centre for Health on Frith Street, the clinic is set to run for a 12-month pilot period. If deemed a success more facilities could open across the country.

The Luxembourg Frank Schleck (CSC) retained elmaillot yellow leader of the overall standings and exceeds the escort, the Austrian Bernhard Kohl, by seven seconds. The Australian Cadel Evans appears to eight seconds.

Blatter and clubs collide in Beijing

The president of Fifa, Joseph Blatter, said yesterday that clubs must make their players younger than 23 attend the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Jerarca's position contradicts the claim of major European teams, who claim that they are not obliged to do so.

This contradiction became clear in two bulletins sent by the Fifa and the European Association of Clubs (RCT, for its acronym in English), successor of the G-14.

"The release of players younger than 23 years has always been compulsory. The same principle applies for Beijing 2008, "Blatter said in a letter sent to all the members of Fifa.

The Swiss added that the fact that the Games in Beijing were not included in the international calendar did not eliminate the rule.

Opposition. The president of ACE, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a statement that there was no legal liability for clubs to give up their footballers.

"As the Games are not in the calendar, the obligation to release players, according to the regulations of Fifa does not apply," said Rummenigge. "We support, therefore, to all clubs facing significant losses," he said.

But
Fifa downplay the issue of timing. "Because of their uniqueness, the soccer tournament at the Olympic Games has always been treated any differently intentionally. However, this does not mean that here there is no obligation for clubs, "said Blatter.

The conflict has suspended the participation of stars such as Argentine Lionel Messi. The star receives pressure from the Argentine football associations to be incorporated in the albiceleste, and on the other hand faces the demands of his team, Barcelona, not to do so.

Beijing 2008 will be a crusade doping

The Beijing 2008 Olympic Games represent the greatest crusade against doping in the history of world sport. The organization enlists an arsenal of 4,500 tests, including 1,300 that were made before the next planetary event on August 8.
To undertake this struggle the International Olympic Committee has its own operational arm: the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), founded at the end of the previous decade, which is responsible for updating the list of prohibited substances, to certify laboratories and define punishment . Strict monitoring will begin next July 27, two weeks after the inauguration.
The Organizing Committee enabled control centres in 41 stadiums, the Olympic village and clinics near the sites of competition.

There will be three daily shifts of work, to cover 24 hours a day. The security measures are extreme: the samples will travel in armored trucks, as if they were freshly collected money from an ATM.

Athletes must be available to undergo tests at any time, as has been done in other editions.

The Costa Rican Claudia Poll he took a sample just arrived at Sydney airport, in the Games of 2000, and then another when he entered the Olympic village, as he recalled the doctor Gerardo Murillo Cuza. In fact, there is no prohibition to take samples to a single athlete twice a day, or days, or one hour before competing.

For WADA, the athletes should receive the message that appears at any time a medical team in front of the hotel or at the end of training. Apart from these tests when random checks will also fixed the first five of each test and two more to be selected at random.

The International Olympic Committee asked for further collaboration with the Chinese authorities to allow the police to identify and prosecute smugglers of banned substances. It is the same method used by the
Tour de France: criminalise those responsible for doping, to instill fear and expose them to a public embarrassment. The operation will continue until August 24, the last day of the final and closing ceremony, thus giving the respective shows could be the last thing some athletes do before leaving China to their country of origin. Strong increase. More than 4,000 tests mean an increase of 24 per cent compared to 3,660 checks in Athens 2004. But this time the IOC and WADA introduced a new rule: athletes who are caught in the doping network also will be outside the London 2012 Games.

The samples will be stored for eight years, during which it will be possible to re-analyze them to detect any new substances to be included in the list vetoed. If any athlete is positive in this period will lose the medals you have earned and will receive the same punishment as if it had been dopado the previous day.

Already the American Marion Jones lived in meat itself retroactivity issue of doping, because it ran out of the five prisoners gathered in Sydney, after admitting that ran not clean. The fight against doping is a truism in the world of Olympism, rocked by scandals since the case of Ben Johnson hit the world in the event of Seoul 88. "We are at the forefront of efforts to eradicate doping from sport," said the IOC president, Jacques Rogge. After his diagnosis qualified on the topic: "Most athletes compete openly and fairly."

Hamilton won the Grand Prix of Germany

Hockenheim, Germany. The British pilot Lewis Hamilton, the team McLaren-Mercedes, won yesterday the Hockenheim circuit in Germany Grand Prix Formula 1.

This was the tenth test of the season, in which the Brazilian Nelsinho Piquet (Renault) climbed the podium for the first time.

Piquet got a surprising second place, taking advantage of having refuelling only once, while his compatriot Felipe Massa (Ferrari) completed the podium in third place. This was the second consecutive victory for Hamilton after successful at Silverstone.
Thus, Hamilton was placed at the top of the table with four points advantage before Massa, who came tied to this competition. "I would have preferred a quiet evening, just in front, but this has not happened. We should have entered (in boxes) for the entry of the safety car, that would have facilitated my job, but I say stay on track.

The team thought that time would be sufficient to achieve an advantage before my second stop, "said Hamilton. At junction, the first three retained their positions, but behind the Polish Robert Kubica won three seats to reach the quartet head. After the first bend, without incident, the platoon was stretched and Hamilton imposed a great pace for half a second per lap. The most remarkable of the race occurred on lap number 36, when the German Timo Glock (Toyota), which had hitherto done a good career, was violently left of the runway at the exit of the pits after a rupture of the right suspension of his car. The pilot was transferred to a hospital, while Toyota said later that he was fine. Strategy. The safety car came in track and everybody was precipitated into the pits to refuel ... except Hamilton, self-assured to stay on the track. When the safety car left the track on lap 40, the Briton was ahead of German Nick Heidfeld and Piquet, who also stopped to refuel. Hamilton refuel 10 laps later and returned to the track in fifth position. But the British couple was the fastest ahead without discussion and its cooperating partner Heikki Kovalainen, Finland.

Then Hamilton took up harassing Massa, who advanced but not without resistance on lap number 56, to overcome shortly afterwards Nelsinho Piquet. "We were lucky. Before the race between a dude and two stops, "said the winner.

Goodell speaking with Packers

Roger Goodell is monitoring the ongoing rift between the Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre.

A person with direct knowledge of Goodell's interest said the commissioner has spoken with Packers management several times recently as tensions mounted between the three-time MVP and his team.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has spoken with the Packers several times about Brett Favre.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.

With the Packers committed to moving forward with Aaron Rodgers as their starter and Favre apparently still intent on reversing his decision to retire in March -- although there have been no reports that Favre has formally petitioned Goodell for reinstatement -- the best outcome for both parties could be a trade.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that the Packers had spoken to multiple teams to gauge their interest in a trade for Favre.

And Tampa Bay is emerging as perhaps the most likely destination for Favre, although it is unclear whether Favre would be willing to play for the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden was a Packers assistant coach from 1992-94 and runs a version of the West Coast offense Favre would be familiar with.

The Packers play the Buccaneers Sept. 28 in Tampa.

Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher said he "can't imagine" seeing Favre anywhere other than Green Bay, but isn't surprised that he wants to play again.

"He loves football, and I think he kind of made the decision when the season was over," Urlacher said. "He was tired, he probably was worn down, like he said and he made a decision that he didn't want to stick with. But he's Brett Favre, he can do whatever he wants. I don't know what's going to happen, but I would like to see him playing somewhere next year."

But Urlacher said Chicago wasn't a likely destination for Favre.

"For us? I don't think that's a possibility," Urlacher said. "If they do trade him, I don't think it's going to be in our division, No. 1. Maybe not even in our conference."

Favre made an appearance at Lambeau Field on Saturday to present former teammate Frank Winters for induction to the Packers' Hall of Fame, but declined to discuss his rift with the team. Favre accepted a team MVP award that night, calling himself "an old, gray-haired quarterback showing I can still do it."

Favre retired in early March, but recently has been having second thoughts about playing in 2008. But the latest, and most intense, episode in several offseasons' worth of Favre's flip-flopping on his future in football was met with lukewarm enthusiasm by the Packers, who spent the offseason planning to move forward with Rodgers.

Favre asked to be released from his contract, a request the team has no plans to grant. The next step for Favre could be to petition Goodell for reinstatement, a move that would force the Packers to release him or place him on their active roster. He also could be traded.

The Packers also have filed tampering charges against the Minnesota Vikings, suspecting that interest from the Vikings is the main reason Favre has changed his mind about playing in 2008. The Vikings declined comment on the charges.

Favre's rights belong to the Packers until his current contract expires after the 2010 season.

Packers have contacted multiple teams about Favre

An idea once even more unthinkable than a Brett Favre comeback is now under consideration.

The Green Bay Packers have spoken to multiple teams to see what they would be willing to offer for Favre.

It is unknown exactly how many teams the Packers have spoken with, but what is known is that they have not relegated their exploratory calls strictly to AFC teams. Green Bay has called multiple teams in the NFC as well. The Packers declined comment.

One NFL executive speculated that the Packers simply are doing their dillegence and fielding any of the potential offers before deciding whether it would be worth trading Favre, who does want to play in 2008.

This hardly means the Packers will wind up dealing Favre. But at least they are debating the merits of it, reaching out to teams to inquire what Favre would bring in return.

By contacting other teams and fielding any potential offers, the Packers then can make a more informed decision about whether or not it is worth trading Favre.

Though it could happen, it still is hard to envision -– the Packers trading Favre.

Yet if Favre opted to play, and if the Packers were willing to trade him -– and those are two big ifs -- the NFC team that would make the most sense is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden is fascinated with quarterbacks and never has enough of them. During his time in Tampa, he also never has had the chance to work with a quarterback like Favre.

In fact, Favre would have to be willing to report to any team that strikes a deal with Green Bay; thus, Favre’s willingness to play for another team must be factored into any potential trade, and the quarterback’s overwhelming preference is to continue playing in Green Bay, not anywhere else.

Still, the Packers have not welcomed back Favre and have told him that he would be a backup to Aaron Rodgers.

Before that would happen, Favre first must decide whether he is willing to play this season, even though he clearly wants to. If he does, he would have to send the NFL and the Packers a letter asking to be reinstated. Favre has not made any decisions about if or when to send such a letter.

But there now is another intriguing storyline to go along with any letter. With Jason Taylor in Washington, Jeremy Shockey in New York and big trades sweeping the NFL, the Packers are exploring the possibility of making the biggest of them all.

Ronaldinho will use the 80 shirt in Milan

The AC Milan today confirmed Monday that its new Brazilian player, Ronaldinho, this season will carry the number 80 shirt in "rossonera."

The exjugador FC Barcelona, twice world best player of the year, chose that number because it indicates the year of his birth.
Ronaldinho normally carried the number 10, but the team Lombard is already occupied by the Dutch Clarence Seedorf, and the vice president, Adriano Galliani, said that nobody would force another player to relinquish his jersey number.
"Never ask a player who gave his number and we will not do so this time," said Galliani.
"It would have been a lack of respect. The 10 Seedorf is, what has and has tried to convince anyone that it was left to Ronaldinho ", he said.
The sports brand Adidas said they had already received 11,000 requests for shirts from Ronaldinho after its signing by the Italian club.

Shockey headed to Saints after Giants agree to trade.

Jeremy Shockey caught more passes for more yards as a rookie -- the one season when New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton was his offensive coordinator in New York - than any other.

The Giants, meanwhile, proved they didn't need their disgruntled star tight end to pull off one of the most stunning playoff runs in NFL history, winning three postseason contests on the road and then beating previously undefeated New England in the Super Bowl -- all while the injured Shockey watched from afar.

Jeremy Shockey, TE

So the Giants sought to do both themselves and Shockey a favor on Monday, cutting ties with the four-time Pro Bowl selection in a deal the Saints had been trying to pull off for months.

The Giants will get second- and fifth-round picks in the 2009 draft in exchange for sending Shockey to the team he wanted to play for most. The trade must be approved by the league and is contingent on Shockey passing a physical.

"I have had a relationship with coach Payton and I appreciate what he has done as a head coach," Shockey said in a statement released by the Saints. "The Saints have a lot of weapons starting with Drew Brees and I look forward to joining my teammates at training camp. This will be a fun year."

Shockey caught 74 passes for 894 yards and was named Rookie of the Year in 2002, his lone season working with Payton, whom he'll be reunited with on the practice field this week.

The Saints report to training camp in Jackson, Miss., on Wednesday, when Shockey will join several other tight ends on New Orleans' roster, including last year's starter, Eric Johnson, along with Billy Miller and Mark Campbell.

Shockey, who spent six seasons with the Giants, broke his leg against the Washington Redskins on Dec. 16.

He is known for his receiving ability more than his blocking, and was unhappy even before the injury -- he was asked to block in addition to catch. Once hurt, he didn't like the fact that much was made of the Giants winning with rookie Kevin Boss in his place.

"Jeremy brought great energy to the game every time he stepped on the field," said Giants team president John Mara, son of the late Wellington Mara, a longtime owner of the team. "He had a close relationship with my father from the time we drafted him, and I had a couple of long conversations with Jeremy this spring and summer. From those conversations, it was apparent to me that a fresh start was the best thing for us and for Jeremy."

The Giants, a proven winner without Shockey in the lineup, cut ties with a player who provided plenty of excitement on the field and plenty of distractions off it -- once throwing a cup of ice in the stands during a playoff game in San Francisco, criticizing Giants fans for leaving a game early, blaming Giants coach Tom Coughlin's staff for a loss in 2006 and skipping voluntary team workouts in favor an offseason program run by his agent.

The Giants also unload the remainder of a five-year, $31.2 million contract extension that Shockey signed in 2005.

Shockey had 371 catches for 4,228 yards and 27 touchdowns with the Giants. He was drafted out of Miami with the 14th overall pick in the 2002 draft.

The Giants' comments about the trade were complimentary of Shockey as if to echo the sentiment: "No hard feelings."

Coughlin called the departing tight end "an outstanding football player who plays the game full speed and plays the game the way it was meant to be played."

"I wish him the best," the coach added.
