Klinsmann names 22, provokes me to scratch my head just a little

By Jared Launius

Here are the 22 players called in for the October 8th and 11th friendlies in Miami and New York (er, Harrison), respectively. My commentary after the jump.

GOALKEEPERS (3): Bill Hamid (D.C.United), Tim Howard (Everton), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

DEFENDERS (7): Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers), Timmy Chandler (Nürnberg), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96), Oguchi Onyewu (Sporting Lisbon), Michael Orozco Fiscal (San Luis), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls), Jonathan Spector (Birmingham City)

MIDFIELDERS (7): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Michael Bradley (Chievo Verona), Clint Dempsey (Fulham), Maurice Edu (Rangers), Jeff Larentowicz (Colorado Rapids), Brek Shea (FC Dallas), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim)

FORWARDS (5): Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar), DaMarcus Beasley (Puebla), Teal Bunbury (Sporting Kansas City), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)

The keepers brought in offered little surprise, though it certainly reinforced Klinsmann's goal to only bring in players getting regular club minutes. Based on talent alone, it's hard to think Brad Guzan couldn't crack this group. But Aston Villa's bench is decidedly not Aston Villa's goal.

Here's a friendly YA Videos welcome back to Oguchi Onyewu, who I'll delightedly admit I was wrong about. Gooch has stolen his way into the Sporting Lisbon lineup and secured a weekly spot in the Portuguese side's XI. I'm not sure the two-time World Cup veteran will ever be a fixture in Klinsmann's XI until he learns to play the ball out of the back, but good by him to put his name back in the conversation.

Speaking of center backs who struggle with playing the ball out of the back, Michael Orozco Fiscal's third-straight camp invite wasn't greeted with such warm warm approval here. I struggle to see the logic. His defending has been shaky and his distribution sporadic in his first two appearances under Klinsmann. Plus, we know what he is. Why bring him back in? Omar Gonzalez's phone line down? Geoff Cameron not worth a look? Clarence Goodson live to far away? I'm confuddled.

It's also worth noting no natural left back was called in. Not that this is any sort of grand surprise, but I'm led to assume Klinsmann is planning on operating with Tim Chandler playing wrong-footed on the left flank going forward. Unless he has some sort of 3-5-2 cooking.

Also: Klinsmann has called Tim Ream into all three camps now, but the Red Bull man is yet to see the field under das coach. I'm actually not certain he's even dressed yet. He has to get a run out this time around, right?

Now, let's talk about the mixed-bag midfield.

Cheers to Klinsmann for bringing in German-American Danny Williams, who has gotten a good run of games for Hoffenheim of late. Williams, I think, has moved to defensive midfield from right back, where he got a decent run of games a couple years back with Freiburg. I don't know a whole lot else about him, but I'm always in support of blooding new players – particularly when they are eligible to represent more than one nation.

The mixed-bag part involves the horde of holding midfielders brought in and, conversely, the dearth of central attacking options. I mean, I suppose I get it on some level. This nation doesn't produce number 10s. But that doesn't mean there aren't some decent options. Benny Feilhaber, Sacha Kljestan and Mix Diskerud all feature in more advanced central roles for club. Does Klinsmann really need to see Jeff Larentowicz again while calling in Bradley, Edu, Beckerman and Williams? The rumors are still swirling about Norway's pursuit of Diskerud, which makes his exclusion even more unnerving for me.

Also, I suppose Alejandro Bedoya was left off to work his way into the side at Rangers? I'm having a hard time grasping why the crafty winger hasn't gotten a sniff from Klinsmann. Particularly with Robbie Rogers not getting the call, I'm quite shocked Bedoya wasn't brought in.

On a brighter note, Michael Bradley has earned his way back into Klinsmann's camp, though I would argue it was never really in doubt. Bradley has logged back-to-back 90-minute shifts for new club Chievo Verona and had a hand in both of his side's goals last weekend. It will be interesting to see if he jumps back in front of Maurice Edu on the depth chart.

The forward corps surprised few, I'm sure, aside from national team zombie DaMarcus Beasley getting another call. Beasley has been in strong form for Puebla and has a lot to offer from an experience/leadership perspective, I think. I'm beginning to wonder if I should start some sort of Herculez Gomez activist group, though. Gomez scored again last weekend, and I can't help but think he's a better option than the still-very-raw Teal Bunbury, who I wrote about when Klinsmann's last roster was announced.

We shall see.

And Then There Was 1 Wild Card

Baseball BettingIt was nearly a month ago, that MLB betting enthusiasts felt that the 2011 season was the most predictable, as all of the playoff spots including the Wild Cards in each league appeared to be decided. Now on the final day of the season, the Tampa Bay Rays have stung their way back to a tie with the Boston Red Sox for the American League Wild Card. Meanwhile, in the National League, the Atlanta Braves have gone on a cold streak, while the Cardinals have been hot, as a result, fishing games enthusiasts are also witnessing a tie in the National League wild card race. Today being the final game of the regular season, it all comes down to this.

The Tampa Bay Rays have been a feel good story in sports betting circles since 2008, when they went on an improbable run to the World Series and lost to the Philadelphia Phillies. Now nearly three years later, the Rays and their low budget of $41 million, have fans and analysts from across the nation, hoping that they out gun the super team known as the 2011 Boston Red Sox.

A month ago, the Tampa Bay Rays were 10 games out of a wild card spot. Entering tonight’s final game of the season against the MLB leading New York Yankees, Tampa must at the very least win to force a one game playoff with the Boston Red Sox. At the same time, the Boston Red Sox, experiencing a meteoric collapse similar to the 2007 New York Mets whom blew a 12 game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies, are hoping that their pitching gets its focus together. If Boston fails to win the wild card, they would become one of only 11 teams in the history of the league to have the best World Series betting odds prior to the season, only to lose the first six games of the season, and then fail to make the playoffs.

On the other hand, the Atlanta Braves are basically begging the St. Louis Cardinals to take the wild card spot from them. Since the beginning of September, the Braves have gone nine and 17 including a seven to one loss to Philadelphia yesterday. At the same time, St. Louis has accumulated a record of 17 and eight this month, including a five to nothing victory over the lowly Houston Astros last night.

Theoretically, if all four wild card teams remain in sync after tonight’s action, it would be the first time ever, that both the AL and NL played a one game playoff in the same year. With a rumored second wild card team being added to each league as early as next year, fans should expect to see a 163rd game almost every season, to determine the final entrants in the playoffs.

If each league’s wild card comes down to a one game playoff, expect the scores to go under the total, as each game will have great pitching matches. In the AL Josh Beckett takes on James Shields, and in the NL Edwin Jackson takes on Jair Jurrjens.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Syracuse Orange: College Football Betting

NCAA Football PicksThe Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Syracuse Orange will meet on Saturday at Carrier Dome.

We’re not sure which was more blatant. The phantom holding call on a punt return in the final minute of the Green Bay-Chicago game that cost the Bears a backdoor cover or the blown extra-point call in regulation that gave the Orange the cover as they eventually outlasted Toledo in overtime (maybe it IS time to bring Tim Donahue on our staff).

However, despite a 6-2 ATS mark at home in this football betting series, we feel they’ll be no such ‘luck’ today for Doug Marrone’s men.

Rutgers’ offense fi nally awoke in its win-and-cover over the Bobcats last Saturday and that’ll serve as a buy sign in this contest.

And despite the Knights’ poor road record in the Free NFL Picks series, two of their last three trips to the Carrier Dome have resulted in a pair of SU wins and covers.

With the Scarlet Lettermen a red-faced ‘Mission Dog’ seeking revenge from a 13-10 home loss last season, we expect an A-type effort this afternoon in the Dome.

Grab the points early in the week and Fuggedaboutit as Schiano and company squeeze out the ‘W.” No ex-‘Cuses.

Current betting lie is: Syracuse listed as 1-point favorites versus the Scarlet Knights, while the game's total is sitting at 49½.

Sportsbook betting pick: Rutgers over Syracuse by 3.

NCAA Football Betting: Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Boston College Eagles

College Football BettingThe Demon Deacons and the Eagles will both be trying to pick up a win on Saturday when they battle at Alumni Stadium.

Another coach taking a leave of absence for health reasons is Boston College fi rst-year offensive coordinator Kevin Rogers. Our college football betting database tells us that the Eagles’ offense has been on leave all season (13 PPG versus FBS foes) so we’re honestly not sure that Mr. Rogers will be all that missed in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood.

Don’t be fooled by last week’s 45-point outburst against Division 1-AA UMass – the Minutemeneked out single-digit wins over Holy Cross and Rhode Island prior to last week’s visit to Alumni Stadium.

And while we’re not willing to back the feeble Eagles and their 0-3 SU and ATS record against Division 1-A competition this season, there’s just no value in making a pledge to the Demons in this pick ‘em affair, as they arrive with an 0-4 ATS series record since 2007 (as well as a dog role in all four of their previous visits).

Wake’s 1-5 ATS mark with revenge versus .400 or less opposition also keeps us in bed for this 12:30 kickoff. Like AT&T, we’ll let you make the call in this snooze-fest.

Sportsbooks currently have the Demon Deacons listed as 1-point favorites versus the Eagles, while the game's total is sitting at 50.

Trends to consider:

The total has gone OVER in 4 of Wake Forest's last 6 games when playing Boston College

Wake Forest is 3-6 ATS in its last 9 games

Wake Forest is 3-10 SU in its last 13 games

Wake Forest is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games when playing Boston College

The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Boston College's last 10 games

Boston College is 5-1 SU in its last 6 games when playing Wake Forest

The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Boston College's last 5 games at home

Boston College is 16-7 SU in its last 23 games at home

NFL Week 4 Preview: Carolina Panthers vs. Chicago Bears (-6 ½)

NFL Betting PicksSports Betting Online Overview

Carolina rookie quarterback Cam Newton finally won his first NFL game in a rain-soaked week three affair against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The remaining hurricane conditions swept into Carolina and made it difficult to see the game, much less play it. But even in the muddy slop that he was forced to deal with, Newton still threw for 158 passing yards and a touchdown. Nothing that the Panthers experienced in its week three win over the Jaguars will prepare it to meet the Bears in week four. The Jacksonville defense was assisted by the weather conditions and still could not stop Newton and the Carolina offense. The Bears will not have that sort of problem in week four.

The NFL betting picks fans in Chicago are still not warming up to starting quarterback Jay Cutler. But what Chicago fans should really be worried about is the Bears’ offensive line. In its week three loss to the Green Bay Packers, the Bears were only able to manage 13 total rushing yards and Cutler accounted for 11 of those yards. The Bears’ offense could not stay on the field due to turnovers and a series of three-and-outs. The boos were cascading down on Cutler as he threw two interceptions that stalled Chicago drives and handed the ball back over to Green Bay. Cutler should have an easier time of it in week four, but if the offense does not pick up the pace then offensive coordinator Mike Martz may be bass fishing next year instead of coaching the Chicago offense.

Carolina Panthers

Cam Newton appears to be the real deal at quarterback for the Panthers. He faced some seriously bad weather in week three and was able to pull out the win. In the first two games of the season, the Panthers were hampered by a bad defense. The bad weather seemed to really help the Carolina defense keep the Jacksonville offense under control. That bad defense will come to the forefront again in week four as the Chicago Bears are just waiting for a defense to tee off on and the weather conditions in Chicago rarely approach hurricane force winds and rain. Jay Cutler may be called upon to win this game for the Bears, and there may be little that the price per head Carolina defense can do about it.

Chicago Bears

The betonline reviews of the Chicago Bears defense this season have been extremely impressive. Veteran linebacker Brian Urlacher is playing like a man possessed and picking up interceptions at a frightening pace this season. But that Chicago defense will have its hands full with the elusive Cam Newton. The Bears’ secondary may not be able to keep up with the Carolina receivers and Newton could very well have another 300 to 400-yard passing day. But the Bears will keep the Panthers out of the endzone just enough to allow the Chicago offense to win this game.

The Bottom Line

The Carolina defense will get better as the season goes along, but it still lacks any kind of sustained pass rush that can give the Panthers a real chance at winning games. This one might be close, but it will be a Chicago win in the end.

Pick: Chicago Bears

Kingfisher East Bengal face Salgaocar SC in the Final

Kingfisher East Bengal face Salgaocar SC in the Final

Khan Thang Paita's 82nd minute hit helped Kingfisher East Bengal beat Prayag United SC 2-1 in the second semifinal of the Federation Cup in Kolkata.

It was Red and Gold brigade’s third consecutive entry in the Federation Cup Final. Alan Gow in the 37th minute and Paita in 82nd minute scored for the East Bengal while Snehasish Datta scored for Prayag in 16TH minute.

The high voltage match between the two Kolkata sides saw attacking postures by both the sides since the very first minute. Prayag’s Joshimar Dasilva Martins pierced through the Red and Gold defense giving the initial jim-jams; in return East Bengal retaliated furiously within seconds when Tolgay Ozbey missed the net by whiskers.

But eventually it was Prayag who took the early lead in the 16th minute when Snehasish Datta buldged the net to put his team in the lead. Just minutes after going one down, East Bengal made a counter attack but Alan Gow waste a chance to slot the ball into the open nets.

Though determined attack gave them result in 37th minute when Alan Gow equalised through a penalty when he was let down in the penalty area by Prayag’s Bello Razzaq.

The second half got off to a slow start with both the team on defensive approach, in the 67th minute, Tolgay Ozbey and was replaced by Orji Pennn Ikechukwu.

Prayag received a jolt in quick succession when Joshimar Dasilva Martins in 77th and Deepak Mondal in 81st minute were shown red cards dropping Prayag to just nine men.

Taking advantage, East Bengal started placing more pressure through the flanks which ultimately gave them result in 82nd minute when Khan Thang Paite on a cross from Orgi Penn slot in second goal to give his team critical lead.

Prayag failed to find a reaction till the final whistle as East Bengal held on to reaches the final of the Federation Cup.

Kingfisher East Bengal will now face Salgaocar SC in the final which was plan on September 29th.

The kickoff is schedule for 6pm and the match would be telecast live on DD Sports and News Time.

It's Time To Bury The Hatchet.

Photo:  AP
By:  Matt Carlson
As you may know, “burying the hatchet” means to make peace with someone.  The phrase arose from a tradition followed by several tribes of indigenous people in North America, most notably the Iroquois, Mohawk and Shawnee, who would bury a hatchet in the ground when entering a peace treaty.  To some tribes, burying the hatchet was not meant as a surrender, rather, it was merely a signal that the hostilities had ended.  In the wake of his appointment as manager of Egypt, I think it is time for some U.S. fans to bury the hatchet when it comes to Bob Bradley.
Bob Bradley has always had his critics.  They started in as soon as he was named interim manager of the USMNT in 2006 and kept it up throughout his tenure.  Since the news broke that Bob Bradley was being considered to lead the Egyptian National Team, there has been a contingent of U.S. soccer fans who have seen this as another opportunity to bang on about Bradley’s faults.  In between personal attacks and the tired Jonathan Bornstein citizenship jokes, some of these people are openly hoping for the failure of Bob Bradley in Egypt.  While it may be futile, I am going to lay out four good reasons why it is time for these fans to bury the hatchet.
First, if you did not want him as USMNT coach, you have your wish.  He is gone now.  He is no longer your problem.  Frankly, you’re starting to sound like the guy at the party who can’t stop talking about how terrible his ex was.  We get it.  You don’t like Bob Bradley.  Let it go.
Second, Bradley is an American.  I know, I know, cue Lee Greenwood and the falling balloons, but it is true.  He’s one of us.  He’s a guy who has spent a large part of his life developing soccer in the U.S. and has advocated for the sport we love in a country that does not respect it.  As USMNT manager, he stood in the breach for a group of people that never wanted him and did his job.  This deserves some respect.
Third, the criticism of Bob Bradley is disproportionate to his results.  If you want to blame Bradley for every bad thing that happened while he was coach, then it is only fair to give him credit for every good thing that happened, too.  By any objective standard, Bob Bradley’s tenure as coach of the USMNT was successful.  He posted the best record of any USMNT coach ever, at 43-25-12.  With Bradley at the helm, the USMNT got a win over #1 Spain and got to the Finals of the Confederations Cup.  The USMNT finished first in CONCACAF World Cup 2010 qualification and, for the first time ever, won its group at the World Cup.  The amount of people packed into bars across America to watch the USMNT in the World Cup last summer is undeniable evidence that the profile of U.S. soccer was raised during his tenure.  The way some people criticize Bradley, you would think the USMNT was a top five side that failed to win the World Cup.  The reality is, he had an average team and he got above average results.  Most importantly, perhaps, Bradley brought in a ton of new players and left a solid base upon which we all hope Klinsmann can continue to build.  You may not believe that Bradley was the guy to take the USMNT to the next level – an opinion I happen to share – but, you have to concede he did some good while he was here.
Fourth, if Bob Bradley is successful as coach of Egypt, it will benefit U.S. soccer.  If Bradley can get the Pharaohs back to their former glory, some of the limelight shining on him will reflect onto U.S. soccer.  More importantly, it could pave the way for other American coaches to move abroad.  Granted, Egypt is not a world power, but Bradley’s move is big.  I previously wrote an article which contained a brief synopsis of how rare it is for an American to coach on foreign soil, so I won’t go into the details again here.   Here’s the link if you want a little history.  (http://watchsocceronline.blogspot.com/2010/08/my-dads-smartphone-and-next-frontier.html ).  Suffice it to say that Ian Mork, who led Belize’s national team for two months, makes the list of “Top Ten Greatest American Coaches of Foreign Teams of All Time.”  Never heard of Ian Mork or knew Belize had a national team?  You are not alone, and that illustrates the significance of Bradley’s hire by Egypt, a team that has won the African Cup of Nations multiple times and is currently ranked #36 in the world by FIFA.  I continue to assert that the U.S. needs more American coaches to go abroad if U.S. soccer is going to keep improving and I applaud Bradley for having the stones to go for it.  Don’t forget, managing Egypt is not going to be a cake walk.  There is work to do as Egypt has not been to the World Cup Finals since 1992 and recently missed out on the African Cup of Nations for the first time in nearly thirty years.  Plus, road trips to places like Libya and Sudan can’t be too awesome.  Remember the attack on Togo’s national team in Angola that left three dead last year?  It would have been far easier for Bradley to have stayed in America and coached an MLS team, but he didn’t.  I hope other American coaches follow his lead and seek jobs s abroad.  If they do, I think some day in the future, we may be pointing back to this time as one of the key moments in U.S. soccer’s development.
Unfortunately, all of this is likely to be unpersuasive to those who still wish to attack Bradley.  I think these people are in the group of fans out there for whom it is more important that they be “right” about something than it is for American soccer to be successful.  To put it another way, they’d rather Bob Bradley fail in Egypt than be wrong about him.  To those people, I would ask this question:   If Bob Bradley fails in Egypt, what is the upside for U.S. Soccer?  I’ll answer that -- there is none.  In fact, it will be detrimental to U.S. soccer if he fails.  However, this is how some fans would have it end up for Bradley, just so they can say, “I told you so.”  This, my friends, is idiocy.  It is the same mentality that has had some fans ridiculing Freddy Adu, excoriating Bornstein and lambasting Ricardo Clark.  I agree that criticism is part of the job description for a national team player.  If a player is not doing what he is capable of, then that is fair game to me.  On the other hand, there is no sin in a player just not being good enough for the USMNT and I don’t think a fan should personally attack a player for that.  Some people seem to take joy in the failure of American players, which makes no sense.  Again, how does it help if an American player is not successful?  The fact is that if the U.S. is ever going to win a World Cup, it is going to need every player’s help.  Even players who never get to the USMNT can advance the cause.  Every player abroad has the chance to make a good impression on someone which may create an opportunity for another American at another time.  Howard and Dempsey weren’t the first Americans in England.  Bocanegra and Edu were not the first Americans in Scotland.  Someone laid the groundwork before them.  Bornstein might open a door for someone else in Mexico.  Michael Bradley may create a chance for someone in Italy.  Maybe an American’s performance abroad will cause a foreign player or coach to come to MLS.  You never know.  As a result, U.S. fans ought to be rooting for any American who laces them up and gives it his all.  In the same way, all U.S. soccer fans ought to be rooting for Bob Bradley now.
So, there it is.  That’s my case.  I hope you can see that it’s time to bury the hatchet with Bob Bradley.  If it makes you feel any better, you can say you are not surrendering, you are just ending hostilities.  Does that work for you?  Good.  Now let the healing begin!

On Jurgen and expectations

By Jared Launius

It's always important, I think, to point out the rather inescapable fact I don't really know anything. This is something one of my writing models, Joe Posnanski, likes to often remind his readers, and it's a plan I think is worth shadowing. Because really, I don't know anything. I'd like to think I know things, but I really just, for the most part, have things I think.

Sure, there are some things I know. I know Jurgen Klinsmann is the coach of the U.S. Men's National Team, for example. I know he wants to play a more creative, expressive style than his predecessors. I know he wants to change the culture of youth soccer in this country. I know he's off to a 0-2-1 start in friendlies against Mexico, Costa Rica and Belgium. There are other things I know, too, like the fact the U.S.'s colors are red white and blue and that we have 50 states, but not a whole lot else relevant to this discussion.

I do think, though, we're having a hard time wrapping our Yankee brains around exactly what is going to happen under Jurgen Klinsmann. Or, perhaps more accurately, what we think should happen under Jurgen Klinsmann.

There's no real poll out there that says "78 percent of USMNT fans and pundits have unrealistic expectations of Jurgen Klinsmann, while 11 percent have realistic expectations, nine percent are too pessimistic and three percent abstained". But I have the idea, both from fans and media alike, there are already some unfair expectations being placed on the German.

* * *

Let's start with one thing: U.S. fans, I think, tend to overrate the national team. This is totally fair and totally understandable and I'm totally guilty of the same thing. One of the great things about being a fan is thinking your team is better than it is. But the problem, I think, is when that tendency clouds rational thought. Sure, when the U.S. plays against Spain, I'd LOVE to think we can stand toe-to-toe with them. But, when we ultimately and predictably don't, it's important to remember, oh yeah, it's Spain.

I was rather shocked by how many columns, blog posts, tweets and so on I read after Costa Rica and Belgium friendlies voicing frustration with the results. It sadly, I think, illustrated one of more negative aspects of this fan base: it's obsession with results.

The results of three friendlies a full year before ANY sort of meaningful competition should be about as important as a player's ability to do a backflip penalty. Sure, it's neat and would be fun to watch, but it's not in the least bit necessary. But, well, we have this obsession with winning no matter the contest.

That obsession with winning has long stunted the development of American players – favoring winning tactics at youth levels over developing the skills to play soccer the right way. Sometimes, soccer education and growth fly in the face of results. So does experimentation.

What's going on at the senior team level right now is not at all dissimilar. We clamored throughout Bradley's tenure for more attractive, attacking soccer. If that call is made, it's important to understand what it takes to get there – particularly for a footballing nation predicated on developing players who bunker defensively and counter/rely on set pieces offensively. It's not easy as simply saying, "Okay Landon, Clint and Jozy, play pretty now!" You can't just insert Jose Torres into midfield, remove Jonathan Bornstein from left back and POOFTA! expect to be Germany. Let's give Bob some credit: if it was that easy, he would have done it.

These aren't surface-level changes Klinsmann is trying to make. He's asking an entire player pool to consider the game a new way. He's bringing in players with negligible international experience and trotting them out for 90 minutes. He's trying guys in new positions alongside players with whom they've never played. These are things that take years – yes, plural – to develop. I wouldn't be surprised nor particularly offended if kinks are still being worked out when World Cup Qualifying begins next summer. I have little fear it will interfere with this side's ability to qualify, but there will be nervous moments, I think.

And that should be fine.

The term "exponential growth" is often attached with U.S. soccer from about 1990 to now. That's fair, I think. The national team has made it to every World Cup since 1990 after not qualifying for forty years. It's emerged as the second-best team in its region. American players have earned minutes in each of Europe's biggest leagues. The list goes on. You know it all, I'm sure.

But, well, here's the thing about exponential growth – it's got a ceiling. This isn't just some number on a graph. The U.S., I think, might be about as far as it's going to get from having a legitimate domestic league, putting more money into the national team and getting more kids to play soccer.

It's baby steps from here forward – no more jumping dozens of spots in the world rankings in a matter of a few years. The peers of the national team now aren't the minnow nations without the resources to match the States like they were 15 years ago. Up here, the competition is established nations with proven youth setups and an understanding of how to play the game at the highest levels. You don't pass them by being bigger, stronger, faster and running harder. Not with any sort of frequency, at least.

I think we're having a hard time grasping as much. We have, in some ways, been spoiled. Many of us grew up in a soccer culture wherein a palpable growth was present from cycle to cycle. Klinsmann isn't taking over the 2002 national team full of youth and the first generation of American players to have experienced national success. He's taking over a team perhaps deeper than it's ever been, but maybe not considerably more talented.

When Klinsmann was hired, it was interesting to read how many fans and pundits said the expectation should be World Cup quarterfinals in 2014. If that's the expectation, I fear Klinsmann may leave under more turmoil than his predecessor. Sure, anything can happen in a one-off, but the reputation of the U.S. internationally, I think, is a team that can get out of it's group if the situation is right.

My fear is that what Klinsmann brings won't be appreciated. I'm not saying results in the big competitions don't matter, because they do. If he fails to qualify for the World Cup, that's a big problem. But I'll judge Klinsmann on his ability to establish something resembling a national style that isn't bunker ball. I'm looking for a clear improvement in the philosophy structure of the youth system, not a run to the World Cup's final eight.

I'm reminded of something a motivational speaker who came to my high school said. I'm paraphrasing here, but he said something to the extent of "to reach something you've never attained, you have to try something you've never done." If, ultimately, the U.S. wants to stand toe-to-toe with Spain, it's going to mean trying things never attempted by this nation.

That, I think, is what Klinsmann intends to do. It's our job to understand there's going to be changes along the way.

Top seed Maria eased into the semifinals of the Guangzhou International Open in China with straight-sets win over Tetiana Luzhanska.

The 6-1 7-5 triumph took Kirilenko, the world number 28 from Russia, one step nearer to her sixth WTA title and fourth on Asian soil.

South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers also took three sets to defeat Poland's Urszula Radwanska, finally winning 4-6 7-6 (8/6) 6-3 in a tough match.

In the final match, second seeded Australian Jarmila Gajdosova was beaten 6-4 6-3 by Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova.

Kirilenko will currently play Scheepers as Zheng will face Rybarikova.

"Woods won't succeed another major"

Tiger Woods in interview
Tiger Woods

Greg Norman conceives Tiger Woods no longer has the focusing needed to win another major championship.

Norman said in an interview that will be published in the November subject of Golf Magazine that Woods has too much distraction now and lacks the "street smarts" needed to add to his 14 majors.

His previous major win came at the 2008 US Open and he has not won a tournament since the full gory facts of his sex scandal broke in November 2009.

"Woods, when he dominated, had a single shot approach," Norman said.

"It was merely about the golf.

"Now there are so a lot of distractions and people are looking things that are wrong with Tiger now, so he's got to deal with that on a day-to-day basis, like every other mortal has to do, right?

"In our lives, in our business, we all have to be answerable for our actions. It's very hard for him to have that focusing. And the more he shuts people off, the worse it gets."

"He feels everything's OK because his world is so cocooned," he said.

Norman added: "Well, merely look at [Woods'] body language."

"He doesn't hold his head up anymore, he's got his eyes down, and he’s trying to keep his eyes away from the camera, right?"

Norman, a former world no.1 and holder of two major titles, will captain the international team at the Presidents Cup in Australia this November.

Football Betting: Spotlight On NFC East Rivalries Week 3 in The NFL

NFL PicksWith the New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and “Dream Team” Philadelphia Eagles all considered to be among the contenders to win their division, it may come as a surprise to some that it is the Washington Redskins at the top of the NFC East heading in to week three. The Redskins have escaped with two close wins at home and will look to parlay that in to success on the road this Monday night, but not before the Giants and Eagles clash at Lincoln Financial Field as the NFC East rivalries take the NFL betting lines spotlight this weekend.

New York Giants @ Philadelphia Eagles (-5.5)

Sunday, 1:00 PM ET
Despite escaping with a sports betting win over the St. Louis Rams on Monday Night Football, the Giants looked like a shadow of the team expected to compete for a division title this season with the injuries that have ripped through the roster. With starters missing on every level of the defense, quarterback Eli Manning and the offense have done the best they can to keep New York competitive through two weeks, and they could be in trouble with a trip to Philadelphia. The Eagles were exposed against the Atlanta Falcons after Michael Vick went down with a concussion, and that one potential injury for Philadelphia could outweigh all of New York’s if he isn’t able to go on Sunday. The Eagles have the best cornerbacks in the league but their front-seven was exposed by Atlanta, and could be again if they don’t go fishing to tighten things up front. Philadelphia should win, but the Giants will keep it close if they can establish a running game.
NFL Betting Pick: New York Giants + 5.5
Washington Redskins @ Dallas Cowboys (-4)

Monday, 8:35 PM ET
The Redskins scored 10 straight points late in the fourth quarter to rally against the Cardinals at home, but they will need to be better overall to escape Dallas with a win this week. That is unless Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo cannot go after suffering cracked ribs and a punctured lung in his heroic comeback sportsbook odds win over the San Francisco 49ers, a game in which he literally willed his team back to prevent consecutive losses to open the year. The extra day off could help Romo and company in this matchup, and regardless of whether he plays or not, head coach Jason Garrett will need to get more out of his running backs. Felix Jones has not gotten enough touches early on this season and that has left Romo exposed, so the entire offense should benefit from a better running game. Washington quarterback Rex Grossman has been good through two starts but did toss a pair of interceptions in his last start, and that should have Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Rob Ryan salivating at the possibilities of what his units can do this NFL picks week.
NFL Betting Pick: Dallas Cowboys - 4

NFL Week 3 AFC Matchup Preview: Patriots (-9 ½) vs. Bills

NFL OddsSports Betting Overview

For the first time in a very long time, the football fans of Western New York have a lot to cheer about. The Buffalo Bills are 2-0 after blowing out the Kansas City Chiefs in week one on the road, and then coming back to beat the Oakland Raiders at home in week two. Now the Bills face the ultimate AFC test as the 2-0 New England Patriots come to town. The most impressive part of the Bills’ game is its offense. After scoring almost 80 points in the first two games of the season, the Bills have shown an unforeseen ability to adjust to an opposing defense and put up points. While some will argue that it was not the New England defense the Bills were facing in week two, there are enough similarities between the Raiders’ defense and the Patriots to make this upcoming game interesting.

The NFL betting lines on the Patriots still have New England as the favorite to win the AFC East. But there are still cracks in the New England armor that head coach Bill Belichick sees and that the Buffalo Bills can try to exploit. The Patriots just got done dismantling the San Diego Chargers’ defense and pressuring the San Diego offense into the ground. The question that this game raises is whether or not the Buffalo Bills defense can do what Miami and San Diego failed to do; stop Tom Brady. Brady has had his problems in Buffalo early in games, but he usually comes out the winner. The online sportsbooks fans in Buffalo may have to sit and watch as Brady finds a way to beat the Bills yet again.

Buffalo Bills

If you are fishing for ways to give the Bills an edge in this game it would have to be at running back. Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller are proving to be a potent running combination, and the Bills’ offensive line is finding all kinds of ways to give the two running backs room to operate. But, even with some new players on the defensive line, the Buffalo Bills still cannot get consistent pressure on the quarterback. The Bills got to Oakland quarterback Jason Campbell enough time to pull out the win. But if Buffalo wants to stop Tom Brady, it will need consistent pressure on the New England quarterback. That was something that not even the San Diego defensive line was able to do.

New England Patriots

The New England offense is so potent that it could strike at any moment. If Wes Welker does not catch a timely pass in the slot, then Chad Ochocinco will take you deep. If you manage to somehow catch little Danny Woodhead, then the next play you will have to deal with the power of BenJarvus Green-Ellis. The only weakness on the Patriots’ team that may affect it in this game is the defensive secondary. If Buffalo quarterback can consistently get the ball past the front defensive seven, then the Bills can score points. But will the Bills be able to stop Tom Brady and the offense?

The Bottom Line

This is one of those NFL picks where you want to believe the upset could happen but you know it probably will not. It is conceivable that the Bills could hang with the Patriots for three quarters of a shoot-out. But, eventually, the Pats will pull away and put the Bills in second place in the AFC East.
