Warren Gatland offered British and Irish Lions head coach job

Warren Gatland with the 2012 Six Nations and Triple Crown trophies
Wales coach Warren Gatland has been offered the job of leading the British and Irish Lions on their 2013 tour to Australia, BBC Wales Sport understands.
Gatland was interviewed for the head coach job in London on Wednesday before returning to his native New Zealand.
Representatives of the 48-year-old, who has just led Wales to the second Grand Slam of his time in charge, are now believed to have begun contract talks.
Gatland's appointment is expected to be finalised in the next month.
Lions bosses wanted their 2013 coach to be "available effectively a year out".
And the Welsh Rugby Union, Gatland's full-time employers, had already paved the way for his Lions appointment by granting permission for him to miss the 2013 Six Nations.
WRU chief executive Roger Lewis has already spoken "informally" to Lions team manager Andy Irvine and Lions chief executive John Feehan about the prospect of Gatland, who was assistant to Sir Ian McGeechan on the 2009 Lions tour of South Africa, coaching the Lions in Australia.
Gatland is expected to appoint his Wales defence coach Shaun Edwards to his backroom team, while England defence coach Graham Rowntree, who was linked with a move to Wales in 2011, is also widely tipped to be one of his assistants.
Wales lost their coaching team of Gatland, assistant Edwards, skills coach Rob Howley, plus other members of their backroom staff to the 2009 Lions tour to South Africa.
The Lions lost 2-1 to the world champions, while Wales were on a two-Test tour in North America.
The WRU are happy to ask Gatland's assistants Howley and Robin McBryde to lead Wales in the 2013 Six Nations and on their summer tour to Japan if Gatland was confirmed as Lions chief.
Gatland transformed Wales from 2007 World Cup flops to 2008 Grand Slam champions within months of taking the Welsh job.
He also guided Wales to an impressive fourth place at the 2011 Rugby World Cup before securing a second Six Nations clean sweep in 2012 - Wales' third Grand Slam in eight years.
Gatland, who also won the 2004 Heineken Cup and three English Premiership titles as Wasps coach, is likely to become the second foreign coach to lead the Lions.
Fellow Kiwi Graham Henry, one of his predecessors as Wales coach, led the Lions' unsuccessful 2001 tour to Australia.
Gatland will take his Wales team on a three-Test Tour to Australia this June before an expected return Down Under with the Lions 12 months later.

Losing Is For Losers.

By:  Matt Carlson
“Losing is for losers.”  I believe it was George Washington, the Father of our Country and an excellent goalkeeper in his own right, who said that very thing when rallying the troops at Valley Forge.  I believe that if George Washington had the opportunity to speak with the US U-23 National Team right now, he would say those exact same words to them.  Abraham Lincoln, another icon of instant success, also had a similar view of failure.  If he had been in the locker room last night after the gut-wrenching defeat to El Salvador which knocked the U.S. from Olympic qualification, he would look the team in the eyes and utter those now famous words, “Four score and seven years ago, we resolved as a nation that losing is for losers.”  It’s called the Gettysburg Address.  Look it up.  You can learn a lot about the future by studying the past.  CONTINUE READING AFTER THE JUMP.

I know this is a harsh reality and not something any U.S. soccer fan wants to hear this morning while the wounds are still fresh, but it is the truth.  As it sinks in for U.S. soccer fans that the U.S. is not going to be in the Olympics, we have to accept the cold hard reality that no one, and I mean no one, has ever learned a thing from failure.  Not Thomas Edison, not Henry Ford, not Michael Jordan.  No one.  I’m sorry to have to break that to you, but it is a scientific fact that once a team or a person has failed at some task, they can never ever improve or accomplish that task.  A quick search of the U.S. soccer-centric messageboards today will confirm that many fans believe this and we all know that if a lot of people believe something, then it is fact.

Hyperbole, you say?  Let me drop some knowledge on you, then.  Did you know that no country has ever won a World Cup after having lost in a different tournament?  It’s a similar correlation to the winner of the Golden Globes being an indicator of who’ll win the Oscars, really.  Another fact for your consideration:  no soccer player or coach has ever won anything after losing in a tournament of this magnitude.  It’s like a race horse that breaks its leg.  The only thing left to do is to take it around back and shoot it.  Sure, it is sad, and you don’t want to do it, but it really is for the best.  It will come as no surprise to many of the posters on message boards today to know that the last three nations to have won the World Cup have been undefeated.  The same goes for the last three managers who guided those nations to glory.  Undefeated for their careers.
Based on these facts, U.S. Soccer has to take action right away.  Caleb Porter made coaching errors in this tournament and we all know this means he cannot be a successful coach in the future, so he needs to be dumped pronto.  Next, none of the players on the U-23 roster will ever develop into anything in the future because they have been a part of a failure.  Well, except for Joe Gyau who should have played every minute of every match, of course, but aside from him, no other U-23 player on this team will ever improve enough to contribute for the USMNT at the senior level.  This tournament result proves that.  I expect that the club teams these players are with will terminate their contracts very shortly because they now have conclusive proof that these players have topped out.

So, what do we do now?  Where do we go from here? I have no idea because honestly, what viable options do we have?  Identify the mistakes and work to correct them?  Determine what we did right and keep doing it?  Work with these players on their weaknesses to develop them into better players?  Use this defeat as a learning tool and a motivator for all involved?  If only there was some historical example that this type of response to a failure had worked in the past, then I would have some hope for the future.  Until someone can find that, though, I want everyone fired!

U-23 MNT Eliminated From Olympics.

Button: Lewis my main rival

Image text here

A week after his near-perfect triumph in Australia, Button was left apologising to McLaren following Sunday's race at Sepang.
The 32-year-old Briton finished 14th in Malaysia after a collision with the HRT of Narain Karthikeyan.
After going into the race with a seven-point cushion over the field, Button now trails Fernando Alonso by 10 following the double world champion's win.
Button, however, does not believe the Spaniard - in a so-far underperforming Ferrari - is a realistic title threat this season.
"Even after such a bad race - and that's hopefully my bad race for the year gone - I'm still only 10 points off the lead, and that's Alonso in a Ferrari. That's not the worry," Button said.
"I'm also only five points behind Lewis, who is the guy in a competitive car, so (it's) still not bad considering the day I had. Lewis is definitely my main rival, and you have to say the Red Bulls as well.
"Those are the guys I still think are the main ones at this point in the season, and will be for quite a few races.

Woods' return to winning ways comes at the right time

So much for "The Big Miss".
Tiger Woods is once again golf's big hit. His five-shot win at Bay Hill was his first win on the PGA Tour since his career was turned upside down by revelations about his private life.
This victory came at the start of a week in which the book written by his former coach Hank Haney is published. "The Big Miss" is the most revealing account yet of Woods' life.
But the former world number one has spiked its guns with his dramatic return to winning ways. America loves a story of redemption and Woods has ensured that now the talk will be of his golf more than the revelations contained in Haney's book.
And the even more significant aspect of the timing of this victory is that it came in Woods' final outing before he challenges for a fifth Masters green jacket. He has sent a powerful message to the golfing world and to himself that he is back where he belongs at the top of the game.
Of course there are no guarantees. In 2009, as he unwittingly headed towards the car crash that prompted his private life being laid bare, Woods won in each of his last appearances before majors and on all four occasions failed to go on to add to his tally of grand slam titles.

Inter Milan sack coach Claudio Ranieri after poor run

Inter Milan sack manager Claudio Ranieri
Inter Milan have sacked coach Claudio Ranieri after only one win in their last 10 league matches.
The former Chelsea boss took charge at the San Siro in September, replacing Gian Piero Gasperini, who was dismissed after only five games in charge.
Despite Inter's poor run, president Massimo Moratti said earlier on Monday: "I think that Claudio Ranieri will remain until the end of the season."
Youth team coach Andrea Stramaccioni will take charge of the Nerazzurri.
Stramaccioni led Inter's youth side to a win over Ajax in the NextGen Series final on Sunday.
Following Sunday's defeat by AC Milan, Inter sit eighth in Serie A, 22 points behind their local rivals, who top the table.
They were also knocked out of the Champions League in the last 16 by Marseille earlier this month.
A statement on the club's website said: "President Massimo Moratti and everyone at Inter Milan would like to thank Claudio Ranieri and his staff for their professionalism, dedication and honesty during their time in charge of the team."

What just happened?!?

Some defensive lapses, goalkeeping errors, and just not good enough. You can blame whomever you want, get upset that the Salvadorian didn't get a red card for the hit on Boyd, or say it was passed the 4 minute stoppage time mark. The fact of the matter is that we lost to Canada and tied El Salvador when we needed a win. Not good enough to make the Olympics. This is just very disappointing especially from a team which boasts some amazing talent.

Wayne Rooney's 29th goal the top of the Premier League

Rooney converted a Jonny Evans cut back just before the break to seal victory over a determined Fulham side.Ashley Young had several chances to double United's lead but found Fulham keeper Mark Schwarzer in fine form.
And late on Fulham should have been awarded a penalty when Michael Carrick tripped Danny Murphy in the box.
The result means United take advantage of Manchester City's slip up against Stoke City on Saturday and with eight games to go are in pole position to retain their title.
United started the day level on points with their neighbours City, but with an inferior goal difference.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson challenged his side to use their game in hand to pull away from Manchester City as well as reduce their goal-difference deficit, admitting it could be an "issue" at the end of the season.
And the opening 10 minutes suggested that United were likely to do both, with Ferguson's side dominating possession and controlling the game.
But United could only muster one decent chance with Ryan Giggs heading Rafael's cross straight at Schwarzer.
Fulham then came into the game with the visitors playing with more urgency and energy than United, who were unusually sloppy with their passing in front of a subdued atmosphere at Old Trafford.
Moussa Dembele and Mahamadou Diarra seemed to have the better of Carrick and Giggs in central midfield and Fulham attacker Clint Dempsey tested David de Gea from 20 yards.
But with the game heading for a turgid stalemate at the break, United sprang in to life to take the lead, much to the relief of the Old Trafford faithful.
It came from Rooney, who smashed home from close range following Evans' cut back after Fulham had failed to clear Young's whipped cross from the left.
United almost doubled their lead after the break with the lively Antonio Valencia latching on to Giggs' delightful ball over the top, but Schwarzer was equal to the Ecuadorian's strike.
Schwarzer was again called into action shortly after, tipping Young's right-footed curling effort from the left round the post.
Young saw two successive efforts superbly saved by Schwarzer before Giggs' goal-bound effort was blocked by Brede Hangeland.
But this was largely a flat display from United, who failed to take the opportunity to reduce the goal difference deficit - something that could come back to haunt them at the end of the season.
And in actual fact United were lucky not to concede a penalty in the 87th minute when Carrick clearly tripped substitute Murphy inside the box.
But referee Michael Oliver waved away their appeals and United hung on for a nervy victory.
The result means Fulham remain in 13th place but, having been humbled 5-0 by United earlier in the season, Cottagers boss Martin Jol will have been hugely encouraged by his side's display.
United next travel to Blackburn two days after Manchester City host Sunderland.

Sebastian Vettel criticises ‘idiot’ backmarker in Malaysian GP

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel
Sebastian Vettel described one of the backmarkers in the Malaysian Grand Prix as an "idiot" after a collision cost him fourth place.
The world champion got a puncture while lapping Narain Karthikeyan's HRT and dropped back to finish 11th.
"Like on normal roads, you have some idiots driving around. It seems there is also one driving here," the Red Bull driver said.
Karthikeyan said some leading drivers try to "bully" backmarkers.
Neither man mentioned the other by name, although it appeared clear who they were talking about.
The incident happened on lap 46, with 10 laps to go, as Vettel was chasing Lewis Hamilton's McLaren for the final podium place behind Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Sauber's Sergio Perez.
Vettel passed Karthikeyan on the back straight at the Sepang track but the two collided as the Indian moved back towards the racing line.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said it was Karthikeyan's "responsibility to get out of the way of the leaders as he is a lapped car".
Karthikeyan said: "With Vettel, I got on to the marbles and the car had a lot of wheelspin.
"I had to jink to get out of it and unfortunately he was there. What else I could I do?
"Some of these guys when you get lapped, they just try and bully you so much, it's not fair.
"I won't mention names but sometimes they overtake you and they want you to go off the road.
"With this car it's a big task to qualify and to finish is a big task. We're a small team. We don't want to be a hindrance but doesn't give them the right to bully you. This is not right. "
Karthikeyan was also involved in an incident earlier in the race in which McLaren's Jenson Button collided with the HRT and lost his front wing.
They were racing for 15th place at the time and Button acknowledged it was his fault.
"I can't do anything but laugh really because it was such a horrendous race," Button said after finishing 14th.
"I didn't do a very good job and everything that could have gone wrong did. Just one of those afternoons.
"A lot of the issues were because I wiped my front wing off, locked up my rears and couldn't slow down."
