The right front tire came off when Alonso took the ninth curve and went to bounce the track.
The safety of the race was in doubt from the previous day, when the pilot Brazilian Felipe Massa had to be hospitalized to receive a blow to the head of a loose piece of metal. His condition was stable but still in danger of dying.
