It will be an interesting bout between Miguel Cotto and Joshua Clottey this weekend. On one hand, we’ll have the relatively unknown Joshua Clottey, who is well-deserved of a fight against a guy like Cotto, but hasn’t exactly shown that he can dominate the sport in the tough division.
Cotto, on the other hand, was a rising star in the division and was even rumored to be close to a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr, but a surprising loss to Antonio Margarito derailed those plans.
But there is some speculation as to how credible Margarito’s win, or in this case, Cotto’s loss was. Margarito was busted using plaster under his gloves in his next fight against Shane Moseley, which makes a lot of handicappers wonder if Margarito did the same to Cotto.
Regardless, the main issue here will be if Cotto can get over his first knockout and his first loss. Often times a fighter is never the same after being knocked out.
Cotto did have a chance to clear his head against Michael Jennings, which he did. Cotto took home the WBO belt for his efforts and now should be even crisper against Clottey.
For Cotto, that fight was a tune-up but Clottey might be a bit rusty. Clottey hasn’t fought in 10 months, which could work against him.
At the end of the day, Cotto is the more skilled fighter and the boxer with the brighter future. There are a number of potential fights lined up for him including Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao or Juan Manuel Marquez if Cotto can put Clottey to bed rather easily.
But if Cotto is looking ahead, he’ll find himself in a scrap. Clottey isn’t a stiff.
Even so, look for Cotto to be focused and ready for the fight this Saturday.
