The Seventh Sign of the Apocalypse

BY: Matt Carlson

Growing up my friends and I used to like working phrases from movies into everyday conversation. The movie Ghostbusters was one of our go-to’s with lots of good ones like, “You didn’t even negotiate with him!”, “What did you DO, Ray?”, “All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon.”, and “That’s a big Twinkie.” In one of my favorite scenes, comedic acting legends Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd are trying to explain to the Mayor of New York City that all of the unusual happenings going on in the City are signs to indicate that the end of the world is coming. When the Mayor asks for further explanation, Akroyd, Ramis and Murray say, “Real wrath of God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness, earthquakes, volcanoes! The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dog and cats living together, mass hysteria!” Well, during the South Africa match this past Wednesday night, I had a “dogs and cats living together” moment.
Before going further, I want to make something clear. I am forever grateful to John Harkes and Alexi Lalas and their teammates for their contributions on the field.

In my opinion, without them, U.S. soccer is nowhere near where it is today. That said, I have been less of a fan when they are broadcasting. I don’t have a lot of venom for them; I just don’t often agree with them. However, during the broadcast of the South Africa match and the post-match commentary, I found myself agreeing with comments that were made by John Harkes and Alexi Lalas. For me to agree with a comment by Harkes or a comment by Lalas by itself is unusual, but for me to agree with both of them on the same night had me very concerned. Was this one of the signs of the Apocalypse? Is it one of the things that Nostradamus predicted? Perhaps, I just have a tumor pressing on my frontal lobe. Regardless, I think John Harkes and Alexi Lalas were spot on Wednesday night.

Let’s start with the comment by John Harkes. He said credit needs to be given to Bob Bradley for giving the young guys a run out. I completely agree. Many fans have taken the position that the USMNT is going to stagnate under Bob Bradley if he coaches for another four years. Well, the early returns would suggest otherwise. In the last World Cup cycle, Bob Bradley brought in over ninety players in sixty-six matches, with forty-nine getting their first caps. Some of those first-timers included Jozy Altidore, Stuart Holden, Charlie Davies, Jay DeMerit, and Maurice Edu. Given how he has handled the matches since the World Cup ended, it looks like Bob Bradley is going to continue his practice of looking at as many players as possible. During the four post-World Cup matches, Bradley has given ten players their first USMNT cap, including Jermaine Jones, Eric Lichaj, Juan Agudelo, Teal Bunbury, Tim Ream, and Mikkel Diskerud. When you add in that some of these players are eligible to play for other countries, this is good early work by Bradley, in my opinion. If Bradley keeps this up, he should know about every worthy prospect in the pool by the time the next World Cup comes around. Bringing in talented new guys should keep the veterans on their toes, as well. Another sign that the stagnation concern may be unfounded is that Bradley has been trying out some new formations. While he has typically played a 4-4-2, since the World Cup, he has already experimented with a 4-2-3-1 and a 4-5-1. The experiment was not a full success, but it appears that Bradley is trying to figure out the best way to maximize his talent. Scheduling a friendly with Chile -- a 2010 World Cup participant -- is a nice step, too. From my perspective, there are hopeful signs out there for those who fear that the program is going to be on cruise control for the next four years.

As for Alexi Lalas’ comment, he congratulated Juan Agudelo, but was also quick to bring a dose of reality into the situation by telling everyone to calm down. Some are criticizing Lalas for what he said, but not me. Did you see the chatter online after the South Africa match? People were already calling for Agudelo to start in place of Altidore. Being blunt and direct is the only way to communicate to people like that. Listen, I think there are a lot of things Altidore could improve upon, and, in fact, I do not think Altidore would have finished the chance that Agudelo did against South Africa, but Altidore is still our best forward right now. Agudelo is very promising and he may end up earning a starting spot over time, however, scoring a goal in a friendly against the fiftieth ranked team in the world does not qualify Agudelo to lead the line for the USMNT. He needs time to continue to develop and fans need to let him do so if he is ever going to reach his potential. This reality check also applies to all of the new young guys who come into the team during the next four years. Diskerud had nice vision, composure and touch on the assist to Agudelo, but that does not mean he should now be the starter in central midfield as I have seen advocated. Brek Shea looked out of his depth in his first start, but that does not mean he should be written off as a result. There are going to be ups and downs with all of the new guys, and I hope USMNT fans enjoy the ride, but keep a bit of objectivity going forward.

So, in taking some of my own medicine, I am going to be objective and will accept that my agreement with Harkes and Lalas is not some frightening sign of end times. It’s merely a couple of experienced soccer professionals stating an informed opinion that I happen to agree with. Now, if I start agreeing with Wynalda, too . . . “Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together, mass hysteria!”

Army Vet, Hockey Player Puts Iraq War Injuries ‘On Ice’

Bowser met with a number of Washington Capitals professional ice hockey team players and coaches when they paid an April 6 visit to the Pentagon last year. Later, he got to skate with some Capitals players during a team practice.
Today, the 48-year-old Iraq veteran still plays ice hockey, despite the loss of the lower portion of his right leg four years ago during a rocket attack on Camp Anaconda, in Balad, Iraq.

Bowser, then a truck driver with 283rd Transportation Company based in Fairfield, Conn., recalled that the enemy attack occurred on April 12, 2004, soon after he returned to Camp Anaconda after delivering a 5,000-gallon load of jet fuel.

Bowser credits Connecticut Army National Guard Maj. Michael McMahon, a physician assistant, for saving his life. McMahon, he said, used his fingers to slow the bleeding from a gashed artery on Bowser’s injured right leg.

“He reached up on my leg to clamp off my artery so I wouldn’t ‘bleed out,’” Bowser recalled.

McMahon, now 45, recalled during a recent phone interview from his home in Hamden, Conn., that his military training kicked in when he saw the stricken Bowser bleeding profusely.

“You just react,” McMahon said. “We took care of him and got him stabilized. There was a combat surgical hospital in Balad.

“Once we got the bleeding controlled, … I thought he was going to make it,” McMahon recalled. Bowser and McMahon keep in touch; they met up in February when Bowser was in Connecticut to play a hockey game.

Wearing body armor probably also saved his life, Bowser said, noting his armored vest was riddled with shrapnel damage. The then-staff sergeant also suffered shrapnel injuries to his left hand.

Bowser said he arrived at Walter Reed Army Medical Center here about a week after being wounded. The doctors thought he would have more mobility with a prosthetic leg, he recalled, rather than by keeping his mangled limb.

“The first thing that I thought of was that I wanted to play hockey again,” Bowser said. “So, I said I wanted to have it amputated.”

Bowser spent more than two years of inpatient and outpatient recovery at Walter Reed, and he was medically retired from the Army as a sergeant first class in July 2006. He rates the medical care he received at Walter Reed as “awesome.”

“You couldn’t ask for a better place,” Bowser said of Walter Reed.

Bowser now works at the Pentagon as an administrator for Army Secretary Pete Geren. In his spare time he plays pickup hockey games at Maryland rinks near his present-day home near Baltimore. He also occasionally travels to play in hockey tournaments.

Bowser plays right wing, one of the three forwards on an ice hockey team. The center and left winger make up the other two-thirds of the forward line, and their job is to harass the opposing team and score goals. Two defensive players are positioned rearward to protect the goalie.

Bowser said his artificial leg can be adjusted to accommodate his skating style, and that having a prosthetic limb actually has its advantages during a rough-and-tumble game of hockey.

“You don’t have to worry about getting a puck slapped on your foot,” Bowser said, noting he enjoys ice hockey’s speed of play and physical aspects.

Bowser completed as a member of the U.S. National Amputee Hockey Team during the 2008 Standing Amputee Hockey World Championships that were held April 2-6 in Marlborough, Mass. Team USA won the silver medal at that four-team tournament, beating out teams from Latvia and Finland. Canada won the gold medal, and Finland took the bronze.

Before he got his job in the secretary of the Army’s office, Bowser had volunteered to work with injured military veterans as part of an initiative administered through Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon R. England’s office.

The Capitals hockey club has sponsored several Military Appreciation Nights at the Verizon Center here for servicemembers and their families, Bowser noted.

Bowser, who got married April 12, said God gave him a second chance at life after being severely wounded in Iraq. Grateful for each day of existence, he strives to help his fellow wounded warriors.

The Anguish of The Anguish of Gale Agbossoumonde

I spotted this at The Offside Rules. I have had a few posts about Gale, but it was great to see him make his full USMNT debut. I have had little chance to see him play but have only heard rave reviews. There is a small video after the jump and a link to a ESPN article that is definitely worth the read.

NCAA Football Betting – Broncos Continue To Fight For Respect Friday against Fresno State

College Football BettingWith a third straight undefeated season within their reach, No. 4 Boise State will continue its fight to gain recognition in the BCS rankings Friday with a visit from Fresno State. The Broncos have won nine straight to open their 2010 schedule, and earned some respect by blowing away Idaho 52-14 in their last college football betting outing.

Fresno State Bulldogs @ Boise State Broncos

Friday November 19, 2010

Bronco Stadium, Boise, Idaho

Online Sports Betting
Odds: Boise State - 33

That win combined with TCU nearly falling to San Diego State in their worst game of the season has left an opening for Boise State in the top-three. The Broncos have already moved in to third spot in the AP polls, but will need a strong finish to their season to have any chance at securing an automatic bid in a BCS bowl game, beginning this Friday night against the Bulldogs.

NCAA Football Betting Preview: Fresno State

The Bulldogs are coming off a close loss to Nevada in which they almost pulled off a major upset before giving up the go-ahead touchdown with 4:51 remaining to fall behind 35-34 in a game that had seven lead changes. Fresno State has now lost 12 straight games to ranked teams, and will have an even harder time rebounding against a Boise State team that is favored by 31 football betting points. This will be the Bulldogs’ final road trip before consecutive home dates against Idaho and Illinois to close out the season.

NCAA Football Betting Preview: Boise State

Although they still trail the Horned Frogs in the BCS rankings, the Broncos still have three more games to play and are in control of whether or not they crack the top-three. A loss from either No. 1 Oregon or No. 2 Auburn next week would change the outlook dramatically, but for now Boise State has to concentrate on what they do control. Anything less than a blowout win will not be acceptable for quarterback Kellen Moore and his teammates. Moore remains the nation’s highest-rated passer with a 191.2 rating, and has thrown at least three touchdowns in five of his last seven outings. The Broncos rank second in both points scored and points allowed, and will need to show the nation why under the Friday night lights.

The Match Up: Fresno State @ Boise State

The Broncos have just two losses in their last 71 conference games, and although one of them was to Fresno State, that shouldn’t have any significance reading in to this NCAAF betting game. The Ducks and Tigers are both off this week so there will be no openings in the top-two, but if Boise State can cover the spread this week there is a good chance they can pass TCU for No. 3, or at the least continue to close the slim margin between the teams.

NCAA Football Betting Pick: Broncos - 33

Some Post-Match Articles

A pretty painful game to watch in terms of the beautiful game. There were some great individual performances and a "W" with a nice goose egg in the back. However, it was about 85 minutes of drag football followed by a moment of class which I must say made it worth sitting through the 85 minutes. I just hope everyone keeps the moment in perspective. Juan is 17 and a very promising young player. Let's just take it easy and remember that Eddie Johnson and Freddy Adu (both of whom I still have hope for) also rode the hype train. Regardless, a great moment for the kid and a great glimpse at some future US players. I have a link for the full match just in case.
