Baseball Picks: Halladay Finally Makes His Return to Toronto This Saturday

MLB BettingThe long anticipated return of former staff ace and Cy Young award-winner Roy Halladay to Toronto will finally take place this weekend, as the Toronto Blue Jays host the Philadelphia Phillies for the first time since trading their franchise player more than a year ago. The Blue Jays received some young talent in exchange for Halladay, but while that may work in their favor over the next couple of MLB betting years, Philadelphia has benefited from one of the most dominant arms in the game leading the way for its staff.

Philadelphia Phillies @ Toronto Blue Jays

Rogers Centre, Toronto, Canada

Online Sports Betting
Odds: Philadelphia Phillies – 130

Halladay has been outstanding since making the move to the National League last season, earning Cy Young award honors in his first year with the Phillies and now following that up on pace for another. Toronto will send young arm Carlos Villanueva to the mound to counter the Doc in Saturday’s matinee game.

MLB Betting Preview: Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies are absolutely loaded on the mound, with Halladay and Cole Hamels leading the way for a staff that potentially owns four aces. They key to Philadelphia making an extended postseason run now is the play of the offense, which has ranked in the bottom-half of the league but has shown flashes of strong play. Shane Victorino and Placido Polanco have done well to get on base, while Ryan Howard continues to be the force that drives in runs, but the Phillies are looking for more from players such as Raul Ibanez and to an extent Chase Utley. Halladay is 10-3 with an incredible 2.40 ERA, and he should have no problem against a Toronto offense that has struggled with consistency all sports betting bonus year.

MLB Betting Preview: Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have shown flashes of being a team that could one day compete in the talented American League East, but there are still a few missing pieces on both sides of the ball that the team will need to acquire to get there. The offense has gone stale behind home run and All Star voting leader Jose Bautista, and Toronto will need key players such as Aaron Hill and Juan Rivera to do better from the batter’s box. Carlos Villanueva is 5-1 with a 3.15 ERA and has looked very good at times this MLB season, but he is simply outmatched against Halladay in this one.

MLB Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

Despite their success, the Phillies have struggled on the road this season and will look to turn things around beginning with their trip to Toronto. Halladay will look to put on a show in the stadium in which he became one of the best in baseball, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the reigning NL Cy Young award winner go the distance.

Baseball Betting: Red-Hot Rays Welcome Reds to Town

MLB OddsThose following the MLB standings have seen Tampa Bay go on a roll, winning eight of their last 10 heading into their series opener with Cincinnati on Monday. The two will resume the series on Tuesday at Tropicana Field.

Reds vs. Rays Betting –Tuesday, 7:10 PM ET

Johnny Cueto (5-2, 1.63) allowed a run for the first time in three starts in a 10-2 romp over the Yankees at home, but that was about it as he scattered a run on two hits over seven innings, with six strikeouts and three walks. Some baseball betting players didn’t know what to think after Cueto started the season on the disabled list, but he has been fantastic as of late and there is no reason to believe he’ll slow down, even on the road. The 25-year-old righty is making his first start against the Rays, and he is 3-1 in five starts away from home with a 1.32 ERA, which is an absolutely ridiculous number.

The Rays will counter with David Price (8-6, 3.51), who reached double figures in strikeouts for the third time this season, whiffing 10 batters in a 6-3 win in Milwaukee. Price allowed a pair of runs on five hits over eight innings, and he registered a walk as well, which is encouraging as he had walked five in his previous start against Boston. Price tossed a season-high 120 pitches against the Brewers, and he just needs to get a little consistency in his game to find the form that made him a Cy Young candidate last season. The 25-year-old lefty has never faced the Reds before, and he’s 3-4 in eight home starts in 2011, posting a 3.40 ERA.

Look for the Rays to be favored at home, where they were swept in three straight by the Reds in 2003, with two games falling under the posted total. However, we all know that the “Devil Rays” of 2003 aren’t even close to the “Rays” of 2011. Even though Cueto may be remembered for his WWE Monday Night Raw-style flying kick in a brawl last year against the Cardinals, he is quickly gaining credit for his performances this season, and he’s been remarkably steady for a player who missed the first part of the season. Price has been up and down this season, and it seems like a five-run outing is just around the corner, which is why the nod has to go to Cincinnati. Cueto has been almost perfect as of late, and if he can keep his walks down on Tuesday, the Reds should be able to cool off the Rays. Wager on the Cincinnati Reds in your best online sportsbook.

Some thoughts on US vs Mexico (I have calmed down a bit)

I have had some time to calm down from last night and though I usually don't post my thoughts, I feel compelled to make some observations about last night.

1. We deserved to lose. Mexico is easily the better team. In truth, on paper they have always been a better team. We have just found ways to win over the last 10 years. The difference of last night is that they didn't get flustered the way previous Mexican teams have done. They have more talent and we have less depth to cope with the difference in the quality of players. This is their Golden Generation. This is hopefully not ours.

2. I am not as upset that we lost as much as how we lost. To go 2 goals up and then give 4 unanswered goals is pretty bad. Too many similarities to the Confederations Cup final. Knowing that we were not the better team doesn't mean that we should still go up 2 goals so early and still find a way to lose.

3. Bornstein was horrendous and always has been. This picture pretty much sums it up. I will concede that he did okay in the WC, but he just doesn't have the talent for this level. Heck, he didn't even play that much with Tigres this year. Thus, we have the pitfall of the 8 year coach. Faith in players that don't have any more (if they ever had anything) to offer.

4. Bob Bradley should have done better. I am not one calling for his head, as I don't see any good alternatives. However, it was a poor performance. A great gutsy decision to start Freddy but Bornstein was a disaster and I think everyone knew it was going to be one except for Bob. In all honesty, I think we still lose without Bornstein in but our chances greatly improve with a different change. Edu or Ream at centerback and move BlackMouth out left. No? Bring in Spector for 'Dolo. Would he have contained dos Santos? Of course not, but he would ave given us a fighting chance seeing as we were 2 goals up. Aside from Bornstein, Bob did nothing to change tactics when we went down a goal and even worse when we went down 2. A coach has to be ready to make those changes given different scenarios. Why didn't he go to a back 3 immediately following the 4th goal? What else do you have to lose? Bob simply had a horrific night. Should it cost him the job? Maybe, but again I ask, what is the alternative? Will Sunil concede to Jurgens demands this time around? I have read this several places, and I agree that a coach doesn't change your talent pool (see #6).

5. Howard needed to come up big but didn't. 2002 was the result of Friedel being unbelievable. The reality is we are still a midlevel team who punches above it's weight class at times. All of those times were the result of fantastic goalkeeping and gutsy defending. Both were lacking last night. Our goalkeepers are our best asset and they must make at least 2-3 miraculous saves to give us a chance.

6. The talent pool is way too shallow. A complete squad has a much better chance of hanging with Mexico. Holden, Feilhaber and Chandler being gone was brutal. The fact that we can't cope with that is a testament to how badly we struggle in the depth charts. We just aren't producing enough quality players. Looks like Claudio Reyna has his work cut out for him.

7. Maybe it was good that we lost in the fashion that we did. I think our results against Mexico in the past, beating teams like Spain, winning our WC group are often deceiving. It makes us look like we have made it or are on the verge of making it when in fact we are still so far away. Now, we have made ridiculous strides in the past 2 decades, but we still have so much further to go. US Soccer needs to see that Bradenton is not the solution, but rather, it is the MLS youth system that needs the resources in order to produce a generation of players worthy of being called our Golden Generation.

8. For all of our issues with our left back, Goodson is not the answer at centerback. He has grown a lot in the time I have seen him play with the Nats. However, I just don't feel comfortable with our squad if he is running our defense at a World Cup. Who is the answer for that? Gonzalez? Not sure but it is a worrying question for me.

9. Lastly, I think it was a lost opportunity to "convert" some Mexican-American fans. The second team phenomenon that Sunil refers to (that they will cheer for us as long as we are not playing them -- their favorite second team) is very true. I have a lot of Latino friends who are like that. I think the more that the US beats Mexico, the more of the younger Mexican-American fans you will get to side with the US. Nobody likes to cheer for a loser. Beating their beloved team led by Chicharito would have helped to do that. I am tired of playing in a sea of green in our country.

I could keep going and complaining a bit, but hopefully this was a little bit more of a realistic opinion rather than a Miller Lite induced blame game. What can I say? I hate losing. I am American after all, and even though I don't consider myself a truly patriotic person, I bleed red when it comes to this team. I know that this is part of the journey and I am glad I can see this country grow as a soccer nation. I want to be able to watch the US compete with the best when I am old. I just don't want to wait until I am in a retirement home to see it. The loss was important for us and hopefully is a good lesson of what needs to change.

USA v. Mexico Player Ratings

By:  Jared Launius and Matt Carlson.

Disappointment.  Frustration.  Anger.  All of these things come standard with a loss to Mexico.  Those feelings are magnified when that loss comes after being up 2-0 before a vastly pro-Mexican crowd on U.S. soil.  (Speaking of anger, I wanted to throw a bottle through the t.v. when they showed an airplane flying a Fox Soccer Channel banner while the ball was in play.  I know it's CONCACAF's feed, but are you kidding? Why were there so many shots of the crowd or the sidelines during play?  If I want to people watch, I'll go to the beach.  Just show me the game.  I digress.)

Remember when the USMNT's defense was the most solid part of the team and we moaned about the offense?  Now, we get to moan about both.  Hurray.  Many will point to the loss of Cherundolo as the reason for last night's outcome, but it cannot be an excuse. Mexico lost a defender, too, but did not miss a step -- or give up a goal -- after Marquez left.  Bob Bradley is going to be flamed today for some of his choices, I am sure, but you can't just scream he needs to go.  If you are in that crowd, you need to propose a legitimate replacement.  For me, it comes down simply to what Carlos Bocanegra said, "we weren't good enough tonight."  That's a tough pill to swallow, but it is true.  The US needs to objectively evaluate how it gets better from here.

Did I mention disappointment?  Frustration?  Anger?  These are difficult times to be objective, but we will do our best.  We are using a 1-10 rating scale, with 1 being the worst rating and 10 being the best.  Do you agree with our ratings or not?  Do you just want to vent?  Let us know in the comment section below.  (mwc)   CONTINUE READING AFTER THE JUMP.

HOWARD

4:  He picked the wrong time to put on his worst performance of the tournament - point blank, coming out on Dos Santos is one of the bigger errors I've seen him make with club or country.  (Jared)

5:  We needed him to come up with one of  those impossible saves that we have come to expect from him, but he could not come up with one this time.  The Dos Santos goal can be criticized in hindsight, but I think that one just comes down to a moment of individual brilliance.  (mwc)

CHERUNDOLO (injury 11')

---:  Boy did we miss you, Stevie, and boy are we going to miss you if this was your last game in a US shirt.  (Jared)

---:  Not enough time for a rating.  His loss exposed the US' lack of depth and experience in the back. (mwc)

GOODSON

4:  He struggled all night to cope with Dos Santos and Hernandez's movement, skill and pace.  (Jared)

4:  Had some poor distribution tonight.  His inexperience showed, but I am not sure it is reasonable to have expected more from him at this stage in his development.  (mwc)

LICHAJ

4:  Didn't see a ton of action after moving to the right, as Mexico's eyes lit up when Bornstein checked in, but he gave the ball away and got caught up too often.

4:  For a young guy whose opponents at Leeds last season didn't look anything like Mexico's attackers, he did a lot of things right.  Unfortunately, he just had to do better on the second goal.  (mwc)

BOCANEGRA

4.5:  Struggled like Goodson, but did captain a good offsides trap all night.  (Jared)

5:  Bocanegra continued his propensity to clear balls back into the middle, once leading to a goal.  On the other hand, if he had not gotten to so many balls, it would have been 6-2.  (mwc)

BEDOYA

4 - Largely ineffective and sometimes reckless, Bedoya reminded us tonight why he still needs time before being entrenched in the XI.  (Jared)

4:  Alejandro was supposed to be on the roster for his offensive capabilities, but, again, his contributons were mainly made on defense.  I have yet to see what all the hype is about.  (mwc)

DEMPSEY

4.5:  This was Dempsey's best cup as a US player, but he's got to put a bigger imprint on the final. That said, he was unlucky not to equalize when he struck the crossbar.  (Jared)

6:  Had a great assist on Donovan's goal and his shot off the cross bar missed by inches.   Once he saw the that the referee was not blowing the whistle, I would like to have seen him stronger on the ball.  (mwc)

BRADLEY

5.5:  He did all the usual Michael Bradley things and even netted the opener, but his touch betrayed him on several occasions and he got caught in possession an unusual number of times.  (Jared)

5:  Scored an important goal that was overshadowed by the game's outcome.  He got caught in possession a couple times in problem areas.  I know it is tough to hit a volley, but Bradley had an open goal in front of him late that I think he is capable of making.  (mwc)

DONOVAN

6:  The run and subsequent finish on the US' second goal was pure class, and, along with Adu, Donovan was the side's most dangerous attacker.  (Jared)

6:  His goal was excellent as he continued his run and showed composure with his off-foot to finish.  Sent in a couple of good free kicks -- an important dimension he adds to the game which is another reason he's still a 90' player for me.  (mwc)

JONES

5.5:  Like Bradley, Jones was solid, but not enough.  (Jared)

4:  Jones was largely anonymous for the first 70 minutes.  I think the US desperately needed a physical presence in the midfield, especially after the first Mexican goal, but Jones failed to step up.  Wasn't that what he was supposed to bring?  (mwc)

ADU  (subbed off 86')

6:  The biggest (only?) positive takeaway from this match was the way Adu stayed plugged in, played smart and still found multiple opportunities to show off his exceptional skill in a starting role. I might have more to say about Freddy in another post. Teaser!  (Jared)

7:  The surprise starter did well.  He got an assist and was involved in the build-up to the second goal.  He had a lot of positive touches tonight, was strong in his hold-up play, and looked confident on the ball despite the magnitude of the moment.  Did you know he was involved in the last three goals the US scored in the Gold Cup?  (mwc)

BORNSTEIN  (subbed on 11')

2:  It does me no good to discuss all the shortcomings and errors, because, the fact of the matter is, he shouldn't even be on the roster. This one is on Bradley.  (Jared)

3:  Bornstein has primarily played defensive midfield with Tigres since his transfer from MLS, and it showed.  He was beaten twice on long balls leading to Mexico's first two goals.  I know this won't be popular, but I understand why Bradley brought in Bornstein -- Spector or Ream would not have had the speed to to keep up with Mexico and a three man backline would have been abused.  I'm not saying it worked, I'm just saying I understand why Bradley brought him in.  Bob gambled and lost.  The only positive for many USMNT fans is that this may be the last time they see Johnny B. on the team.  (mwc)

AGUDELO (subbed in 63')

4 - Was ineffective when he came in.  (Jared)

4:  Juan did not have an impact tonight.  The learning process continues for him.  (mwc)

KLJESTAN (subbed in 86')

---:  Did well to almost set up a goal, but didn't have enough time to make a stamp.  (Jared)

---:  Sacha did not have enough time to get a rating, but he had a nice touch that nearly resulted in a goal.  (mwc)

I Blame....

"So what I want you to do is to go into the Mexico game and ruin it. I know you haven't played a competitive match in over 3 months, but we will let you use your lack of pace and poor touch to truly throw them off."

USA v. Panama Player Ratings

By: Evan Ream and Matt Carlson

Because Fox Soccer's coverage has driven me crazy, I watched the game on Univision.  It was a bit nostalgic for me as Spanish language broadcasts were the only soccer that was on t.v. when I was a kid.  I understood every third or fourth word, but the commentators make the game sound so much more interesting. Heck, even Marcelo Balboa's comments on the pre-game show appeared to be more insightful when he said them in Spanish.

As to the game itself, it seemed eerily like the first Gold Cup match against Panama for awhile -- lots of US possession, Panama in a defensive posture, some close chances . . . but no US goals. The US continued in its struggles to break down a bunkered opponent.  That was, until, Freddy Adu came back from the dead and saved the day!  Okay, so that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it was really nice to see Freddy return.  What actually happened is that the stars of the USMNT -- Dempsey and Donovan -- stepped up and did what stars are expected to do, setting up a game against Mexico for CONCACAF supremacy.  I don't think it was a stellar performance, but the USMNT got the job done.  (mwc)

We are using a 1-10 rating scale, with 1 being the worst rating and 10 being the best. Do you agree or disagree with our ratings? Let us know in the comment section below. CONTINUE READING AFTER THE JUMP.

HOWARD

7: Only made 1 or 2 saves, but he was there when needed. (Evan)

5: He had two good saves and a confident punch on a corner kick, but was largely untroubled tonight by a Panama team that seemed disinterested in offense during the first half. (mwc)
BOCANEGRA

6: The captain struggled at times with the speed of a few Panamanian attackers, but didn't allow a goal. The USA has not allowed a goal since the first half of the second game of the group stage. (Evan)

5: Established better air supremacy than the Allies during World War II. Alright, I was reaching there, but Boca got his head to every ball that came his way.  He did allow an attacker in behind him resulting in a nervous moment for the US in the second half.  (mwc)
GOODSON

6: Was beaten by speedier players a few times, but won absolutely everything in the air. (Evan)

5: Goodson had a mixed night. He had a good tackle in the box and won several balls, but he also unnecessarily over-committed and then fouled to give Panama a free kick in a dangerous spot at the end of the first half. (mwc)
CHERUNDOLO

7: Was very dangerous going forward. He served in a cross that nearly resulted in a goal. 'Dolo didn't get beat and even won a few balls in the air. (Evan)

5: He had a solid game tonight. Sent in the cross that Agudelo headed off the post and made an important tackle in the box late in the game. (mwc)
LICHAJ

6: Decent game from Lichaj. He had a few good runs and was solid defensively. (Evan)

5: Lichaj did a nice job tonight, for the most part. He closed his man down in two one-on-one situations and made a couple of good runs into the offensive end.  Bornstein bashers rejoice.  (mwc)
KLJESTAN (subbed off 45')

4: Had a very quiet night and lost the ball a few times. Strangely, he was used on the outside rather than up top for this game. Was subbed at halftime. (Evan)

4: He did not seem to have it offensively this game, but, to his credit, he put in the work on the defensive end before he was subbed off. (mwc)
JONES

5.5 His touch looked heavy at times, but he won a lot of challenges and showed excellent range in the center of the field. (Evan)

5: Not his best game, but I commend him on avoiding a yellow card keeping him eligible for the Championship game. Jones' first taste of US v. Mexico ought to be interesting. I wonder how he will react if Marquez lets loose with another one of his trademark karate kick cheap shots? (mwc)
BRADLEY

6: Controlled the center of the field, but should have done better in the final third. (Evan)

5: Bradley was not as dominant tonight as I thought he should have been. Solid, but nothing spectacular. (mwc)
BEDOYA

5: Made some dangerous runs, but none of them resulted in anything. Was guilty of giving away the ball a bit too easily at times. (Evan)

4: Not as good as the Jamaica game, but not terrible. His first touch when receiving the ball was suspect, but he worked hard and he had an important poke away in the box in stoppage time. (mwc)
DEMPSEY

7: Was quiet at times, but he scored the winning goal on a great back post run where he was exactly even with the defender. That alone is enough for a 7. (Evan)

7: Dempsey’s goal was a thing of beauty. He made his run, he tap danced on the line of defenders to stay onside and he stretched to re-direct a hard, bouncing pass into the net. That was no sitter, people. He also had a couple of nice passes that caused Panama some trouble. (mwc)
AGUDELO (subbed off 66')

6: Very unlucky not to score. As always, he showed that he isn't afraid to run at people, but at times Felipe Baloy (who was probably Man of the Match) got the best of him. (Evan)

4: As a starting forward, he needs to have more impact on the game than he did tonight. I realize that he hit the post, but he did not have enough positive touches in the offensive end. (mwc)

DONOVAN (subbed on 46')

7: Donovan had his best game this tournament. He was smooth on the ball and provided defensive cover. His pass that set up Dempsey was perfect. (Evan)

6: I do not think the US is good enough to consistently win games with Donovan only playing for a half. The gamble paid off, though, and he should be fresh for Mexico.  The US needed a moment of individual excellence to get a result and Landon stepped up with a perfectly struck assist. If he hits that any differently, Dempsey does not score. (mwc)
ADU (subbed on 66')

6.5: Adu had that great long ball to set up the goal and completed a few dribbles, but he also gave away the ball in bad places a few times. In all, this was probably his best game for the national team. (Evan)

6: If you were not excited to see Adu waiting on the touch line to be subbed into the game, then you, sir or madam, are a Communist. He had to be feeling the nerves and the pressure in his first game back knowing any mistake could send him back into exile, yet he showed good touch and vision on the early ball to Donovan in the build up to the goal. He wasn't perfect, but he did some good things. I wish Freddie the best of luck as he continues on the road back. (mwc)

United States forward DaMarcus Beasley has joined Mexican club Puebla. The team confirmed Beasley's signing on its Twitter feed Wednesday. The 29-year-old American is coming off a season with German club Hannover 96 in which he saw little action. He also has played with Glasgow Rangers, Manchester City, PSV Eindhoven and the Chicago Fire. Beasley has played almost a decade on the U.S. national team and was on the United States' 23-man roster for the 2010 World Cup, making one brief appearance. He also is a veteran of the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

Breaking Down The Top Five Contenders To Win Wimbledon

Tennis BettingThe tennis spotlight will land on the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club this summer, as the best in the world compete for the third major of the betting season at Wimbledon. The competition has never been so fierce at the highest level, and the tennis grand slams are no longer just about an eventual final between Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer. Here is a quick look at the top five contenders for this year’s Wimbledon tournament.

Rafa Nadal

The No. 1 ranked player in the world proved his merit once again at Roland Garros, but Nadal has constantly complained about how the long season has been tough on his legs and fatigue may start to take its toll on him at Wimbledon. Nadal faces one of the toughest roads to the finals with potential matchups against Marin Cilic and Robin Soderling before any showdown with his nemesis Federer, and if he makes it the distance it will take an incredible amount of determination for him to close out his second grand slam win of the season.

Roger Federer

Even those in the MLB world seem to pay attention whenever Roger competes in the finals at a grand slams tournament, mainly because that elusive 17th grand slam win has eluded him over the past couple of years. Not since he took the Australian Open in 2010 has Federer been at the top of his game, but he looked very good in pushing the clay court king Nadal in the finals of the French Open and it may have been a sign that he is ready to get the job done on his own turf at Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic

Djokovic conceded his 41-win streak to Federer in the semi finals at Roland Garros, but there is every reason to think that he will bounce back as determined as ever at this year’s Wimbledon. It may have been a blessing in disguise for the Joker to avoid Nadal at the French Open, as he now sets out on a new sports betting bonus goal with the chance at his second grand slam title of 2011.

Andy Murray

England’s greatest hope will once again look to break through with his first Grand Slam title, but he has never reached the finals at Wimbledon. Semi final appearances the past two seasons have been quite the tease for the home fans, and with one of the tougher roads to the finals once again it appears as though he will have to wait at least one more year before his streak of futility ends.

Robin Soderling

Soderling has one of the easier roads to the Wimbledon final, but the problem is doing something if he gets there. Soderling has never beaten Federer or Nadal in a major, and with both playing at such an incredible level heading into this tournament it is unlikely that online casino trend will end anytime soon.

MLB Free Pick for June 21, 2011: Philadelphia Phillies vs. St. Louis Cardinals

Baseball PicksSports Betting Overview

The St. Louis Cardinals are just happy to still be in the playoff hunt in the NL Central after the rash of significant injuries they had to start the season. But now that some of the key Cardinals are coming back, the MLB betting world if the Cardinals will be able to stand with the Milwaukee Brewers and compete for the NL Central pennant. Even with most of their major parts back in place, the Cardinals are still struggling and their spot in the MLB standings atop the NL Central is in jeopardy.

For a little while there, it looked like the Phillies would actually have to deal with the Atlanta Braves as Philadelphia marched towards another NL East pennant. But as the MLB scores roll in on the way to July, the Philadelphia Phillies are opening up a lead on the Atlanta Braves and the Braves do not seem able to respond. There is still more than half the season left to go, but the Phillies look like they have hit their groove and are in command of their game.

St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals have lost seven of its last 10 games and are currently tied with Milwaukee for the top spot in the NL Central. The Cardinals managed to pull out wins in the last two games of their series with the Kansas City Royals, otherwise St. Louis would be looking up at Milwaukee by a few games.

Kyle McClellan takes the mound for St. Louis in this game with his 6-3 record and 3.96 ERA. McClellan just finished a rehab stint in the minors and this will be only his second start since coming back up to the Cardinals. He had gotten off to a good start to the season, but his injury really put him off track. He did not seem to have much control in his last outing, but the Cardinals attribute that to rust from the injury. In this game, McClellan needs to start getting his stuff back.

Philadelphia Phillies

Cole Hamels had the chance to be the first pitcher in the majors to get 10 wins this season, but he blew it against Seattle. In this game, it will be Roy Halladay’s turn to try and win his 10th game of the season. Halladay is 9-3 with a 2.56 ERA on the year. Halladay has not played the Cardinals yet this year, and he is coming off a bad outing against the struggling Marlins. St. Louis is a good hitting team, and that may give Halladay problems.

The Bottom Line

Something is going on with the super-hyped starting rotation for the Philadelphia Phillies. This is actually Halladay’s second shot at getting his 10th win of the season. His first try was the Florida game where he gave up four runs in seven innings. This would be a good time for the Phillies’ starting rotation to snap out of whatever funk they are in.

Many questions remain unanswered in Afridi’s case

While the raging dispute between Shahid Afridi and the Pakistan Cricket Board has come to a close, the governing body of the game in Pakistan has succeeded in avoiding many important and pertinent questions which were raised during the last two weeks.

Shahid Afridi

This was stated by Mehmood Mandviwalla who appeared as counsel for Shahid Afridi in the case.

Mehmood felt that the main question is whether there is a link between the grant of the NOC to play for Hampshire with the disciplinary proceedings since the ICC clearly lays down the guidelines for refusal of NOC by a home board.

"The question is whether the PCB follows such guidelines or again uses its own judgement to grant, refuse or take away an NOC that has already been given," Mehmood pointed out.

He added that the ICC recognises that players have a fundamental right to earn a living and hence cannot be deprived of an NOC by a home board and that an NOC is only a guarantee that the player should remain available to play for the national side and the player’s fitness should not be comprised while playing county cricket.

He further stated that the PCB does not appear to have a permanent disciplinary committee and it functions on a need-basis with excessive authority that is delegated to them.

Jamaica 0-2 USA [2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup]

June 19, 2011: MNT vs JAM Press Conference

USA v. Jamaica Player Ratings

By:  Evan Ream, Jared Launius, and Matt Carlson

The USA put the past three games of less-than-their-best behind them, and showed the kind of performance we have come to expect from the USA against inferior CONCACAF opponents.  I have to admit to being a bit nervous when I saw Mexican referee, Marco "Eddie Munster" Rodriguez, but it was the USA that got the benefit of a questionable call, leaving Jamaica a man down.  For the first time in the Gold Cup, the USA put the energy in from the opening whistle.  Unlike the Panama game where the USA also domintated, today's game always felt to me like the USA was going to score more than one.  The only downside was that Altidore, Jones and Cherundolo all got banged up and we'll just have to wait to see how badly. (mwc)

We are using a 1-10 scale, with 1 being the worst rating and 10 being the best.  Do you agree or disagree with our ratings?  Let us know in the comment section below.  CONTINUE READING AFTER THE JUMP.

HOWARD:

7:  Timmy's save in the third minute gave the US the chance it need to put on the performance it did – if that ball goes in, the game goes whizzing off in another direction.  (Jared)

7:  Kept us in the game by making an early crucial save against Ryan Johnson. I'm starting to wonder if the games we win are just the ones where Howard makes the save in the first 10 minutes and the games we lose are the ones where he doesn't.  (Evan)

7:  Had a huge stop early in the game to keep the US from falling behind yet again.  It was a game changer.  Off topic, but how does Fox Soccer Channel not show an in-game replay of that?  (mwc)

CHERUNDOLO:

6:  The Hannover skipper wasn't as sharp as he has been when in possession of the ball, but his defending, per usual, was stout.  (Jared)

6.5:  Had some great overlapping runs and service in the box, solid if unspectacular.  (Evan)

6:  Continued his very solid tournament.  No one got past him tonight.  (mwc)

BOCANEGRA:

6:  Aside from leaving Luton Shelton completely unmarked in the box in the third minute, Bocanegra captained a sound and – at times – stifling defense.  Enter generic comment about his poor distribution here.  (Jared)

6:  Didn't really have much to do the whole game.  His distribution wasn't great as usual.  (Evan)

6:  Stepped up several times to win balls in the air keeping the pressure on Jamaica's defense.  (mwc)

GOODSON:

6.5:  I'm finding it hard to deny that Goodson is the US' best-choice center back right now – his positioning has been great and getting the ball around that giant frame has been difficult for CONCACAF foes all four games.  (Jared)

6:  Pretty much the same as Boca.  (Evan)

6:  He was given the opportunity and has taken advantage of it.  It is his position to lose now.  (mwc)

LICHAJ:

6:  The wrong-footed left back was an absolute menace with his runs down the left flank in the opening 45 minutes, but he seemed to scale things back for the second half. Not sure if that was Bradley's call or his, but the US looked more dangerous when he did as much.  (Jared)

7:  It must be tough to switch from right back to left back and Lichaj sometimes struggles with his service using his left foot, but he neutralized Dane Richards and nearly scored a goal. Great performance from Lichaj.  (Evan)

6:  Did very well to contain a quick Dane Richards and still got forward.  I am waiting for the US to start using his long throw-in like a free kick in the offensive end.  (mwc)

BEDOYA (subbed off 65')

6.5:  Quite a tournament from a guy that wasn't in the original 23.  Bedoya made the most of his call to the XI, making lively runs with and without the ball and opening up space for the midfield to move in underneath him.  (Jared)

5.5:  I'm not drinking the Bedoya Kool-Aid like others are, but he was solid tonight.  He probably should have scored on a header in the first half.  (Evan)

6:  Surprise starter tonight.  Had his best game in a USMNT uniform, in my opinion.  (mwc)

JONES (subbed off 75')

6:  Quite the polarizing match for Herr Jones: he netted his first goal in a U.S. shirt, but many are complaining about his (alleged, I'll add, as I didn't think it was a complete simulation) dive that got Jamaica's Taylor sent off. Get over it, people, that wasn't the first dive we've seen from an American, and it certainly won't be the last. No one was complaining last year when Jozy's dive against Slovenia set up what should have been a good goal from Maurice Edu in the World Cup.  (Jared)

7.5:  Very complete performance from Jones today. He scored the game winner, won balls and distributed well.  He embellished the red card a little bit, but he was fouled.  This was Jones' best performance as a member of the USMNT.  (Evan)

6:  Did a lot of things well, but whiffed on a good chance in the first half and got a yellow for a stupid foul that he just cannot commit at this level.  I have been waiting for him to unleash a shot from long range.  (mwc)

BRADLEY

6.5:  His passing was more sporadic than it has been of late and he over-committed on Jamaican dribblers to set up the Reggae Boyz's two best chances, but Bradley worked his ass off and played some lovely through balls to create dangerous opportunities for the US.  Also, note that attempted full-volley in the second half – Bradley is playing with great confidence right now.  (Jared)

4:  Bradley had his worst game of the tournament.  He struggled to keep the ball.  His only real highlight was his through ball that Lichaj nearly scored on.  (Evan)

6:  Another good game moving the ball around and winning balls.  Had a couple of dangerous passes that split the defense, but admittedly a few bad turnovers.  (mwc)

DEMPSEY

7.5:  Dempsey's passing was much more deft this game – particularly when linking with Agudelo – and he was constantly dangerous. Also, this time, he was right to take a touch 1 v. 1 in the box.  (Jared)

7.5:  According to Opta he had six shots on goal while no other US player had more than one. Dempsey simply wasn't going to be denied today. His first touch on his goal was amazing.  (Evan)

6:  Always dangerous tonight, with three solid shots before getting his goal.  Bounced back from his worst game in awhile with his best game of the Gold Cup.  The last time I saw him do that John Cena thing was when he scored for Fulham after a spell on the bench.  A Clint with something to prove is a very good Clint.  (mwc)

KLJESTAN

7.5 – My man of the match. Many (myself included) have been imploring Bradley to deploy a 4-5-1 that features a true point to the central-MF triangle (either Kljestan, Feilhaber or Torres) for ages and –SHAZAM! – look what happens when he does – a convincing dos-a-cero result against a hot team and the most aesthetically pleasing game we've seen the Yanks put together in some time.  (Jared)

7:  Hollywood had his best game in a long time for the USMNT. He was asked to play as an attacking midfielder and he did an excellent job at it.  His through ball to Landon Donovan was what this team had been missing.  (Evan)

6:  He had several good ideas tonight, although his touch betrayed him on a couple.  I wasn't a big fan of his corner kicks and I don't see him as being capable of being our #10 against better teams, but he earned more playing time.  (mwc)

ALTIDORE (subbed off 9')

--  Not fair to give Jozy a grade, though – and I don't mean to sound insensitive – the ball movement was much stronger with a different forward on.  Even if he is healthy, does Jozy deserve a start Wednesday? I say no.  (Jared)

10:  Wait, that was the number of minutes he played...N/A for Jozy...Get better!  (Evan)

--  Injured too early to get a rating.  It is too bad, as he has been playing well.    (mwc)

AGUDELO (subbed on 12')

7:  I know he didn't score, but this was Agudelo's best shift in a US shirt – his movement and interplay with Dempsey, Bedoya and Kljestan was superb, his passing was sharp and decisive, his work rate was fantastic and he kept the ball well. In short, he dominated CONCACAF opponents the way you'd expect Altidore to do. (Jared)

6:  Was put in a tough spot and responded pretty well.  He made the second goal, but he also drifted out of the game for long stretches, including most of the first half.  (Evan)

6:  Good hold up play and tracked back on defense. His assist highlighted his excellent vision and composure with the ball.  (mwc)

DONOVAN (subbed on 65')

4:  His one-touch pass to spring Agudelo set up the second goal, but Donovan's touch otherwise – particularly on the through ball he flubbed – continued to be troubling.  I'll give him a pass for being so fatigued – Donovan has battled for the US for a decade and almost always makes himself available to don the red, white and blue.  Just don't let it happen again, sir. (Jared)

6:  Donovan was pretty good, but also a bit rusty. You could tell that he was tired, but he definitely helped.   (Evan)

6:  Came on late, but had a positive impact with some nice interplay, including being involved in the second goal.  Here's some trivia -- when was the last time Donovan and Adu both started a USMNT game on the bench?  (mwc)

EDU (subbed on 75')

5:  He sent a howling shot that just missed the near post, but Edu didn't stamp an imprint on the game when he came in. This is understandable, I think, as Edu isn't really the type of guy to come in and make a difference in limited time. (Jared)

--  Didn't play long enough for a rating.  (Evan)

5:  Held his own in limited time.  (mwc)

I am not against DRS, says Tendulkar

 Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar is not against the controversial Decision Review System (DRS) but he wants it to be more consistent, the Indian batsman said.

The general perception is that the powerful Indian cricket board's steadfast opposition to DRS stems partially from the apprehension that Tendulkar and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, share about the technology's accuracy.

Tendulkar, however, said he was not altogether against the technology.

"I am not against DRS, but I feel it will be more effective with the support of the Snickometer and Hot Spot technology. This will give more consistent results," he told a cricket website.

The Snickometer is used detect edges, while Hot Spot gives more convincing indications of the ball's point of contact. Hawk Eye technology, used more often, replicates the ball's trajectory.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has recommended the mandatory use of DRS, under which teams currently can make two unsuccessful appeals against an umpire's decision per innings, in all formats of the game but the Indian cricket board have vowed to oppose it.

Incidentally, Tendulkar's one-day opening partner Virender Sehwag is an admirer of it while former India coach Gary Kirsten has also backed the technology which, the ICC claimed, has improved correct decisions by seven percent.

"I have even told the ICC that we have no problem with Hot Spot. Our objection is to ball tracking," Indian cricket board president Shashank Manohar told website.

BCCI secretary N Srinivasan shot off an angry letter to the ICC in March, claiming the technology's "inadequacy" had been exposed in this year's 50-over World Cup, which was won by India.

The BCCI's opposition meant the DRS would not be used in India's tour of England starting next month.

Baseball Betting: Yankees Will Get The Job Done Against Cubs With Or Without Jeter

Baseball OddsWhile the MLB news spotlight has remained on Derek Jeter and his quest for 3000 hits as a member of the New York Yankees, the team has quietly pulled off one of the most impressive offensive runs in recent history. The Yankees have dominated the majors in home runs with Curtis Granderson, Mark Teixera, and Alex Rodriguez leading the way, and now have the chance to flex their muscle in the Windy City while Jeter rests with an injury.

New York Yankees @ Chicago Cubs

Sunday June 19, 2011 – 8:05 PM ET

Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois

MLB Betting Odds: New York Yankees – 130

The Cubs have been absolutely awful this season regardless of where they play, and will be hard-pressed to avoid the sweep at the hands of the powerful Yankees. New York comes into this game in the midst of an intense battle for the American League East division with the rival Boston Red Sox, and can’t afford to lose games against opponents that they are this heavily favored to beat.

MLB Betting Preview: New York Yankees

New York will have ace CC Sabathia on the mound on Sunday for the series finale, and the hope is that the former Cy Young winner can bring his best stuff and close out the series on a winning note. Sabathia has been excellent this season with an ERA of just 3.28, and will look to bring his best stuff under the bright lights of Sunday night baseball on the national broadcast. With the drive for 3,000 on hold the Yankees offense will have the MLB chance to show just how strong they are, and if they get to Cubs’ starter Randy Wells early on this one could get ugly in a hurry as New York pulls away.

MLB Betting Preview: Chicago Cubs

Wells is just 1-1 with a 5.63 ERA on the year, and has allowed 10 runs in his last 13 innings of work without making it past six innings in any of his starts this season. Pitching has been a sore spot for Chicago all season with 331 runs allowed through their first 66 games, and it is unlikely that one of the NL’s worst defenses will fare any better against the powerful pinstripes. The Cubs’ offense hasn’t been much better with little to rally around beyond Starlin Castro’s incredible sports betting play, and runs will be tough against Sabathia.

MLB Betting: Outlook & Pick

The Yankees will add to their league-leading home run total by roughing up Wells at Wrigley, while Sabathia continues to pace New York’s pitching staff as the pinstripes keep pace with the Red Sox in the tough AL East. The Cubs have been in tough to produce on both sides of the ball all season, and with another unfavorable pitching matchup they could be in big trouble on Sunday in the series finale.

MLB Betting Pick: New York Yankees - 130

Jozy's Strike

We will take it -- US vs Guadeloupe Highlights

Not a bad performance, but bloody hell man, we have got to finish better than that. Regardless, we got the result and I look forward to the Jamaica match.

USA v. Guadeloupe Player Ratings

By:  Jared Launius, Evan Ream and Matt Carlson

The USMNT got past Guadeloupe tonight, 1-0.  Fortunately for the USMNT, Henry, Gallas, Biabiany, and Saha all chose to play international football for France.  A win is a win, but the USMNT has been unimpressive so far in the Gold Cup, in my opinion.  Wasn't the Panama game supposed to be a wake-up call?  Yet, the USMNT was uninspiring and unacceptably wasteful with its chances on goal.  The US is not going to get 7-8 chances against Mexico.  Actually, if the USMNT keeps playing like they have been in the first three games, forget Mexico, the USMNT is not going to get past Jamaica.

By popular demand, we have switched from the Sky Sports rating scale and have gone to a straight 1-10 scale, with 1 being the worst rating and 10 being the best.  As ususal, there are some difference between the three of us today.  Do you agree or disagree with our ratings?  Let us know in the comment section below.  (mwc)  CONTINUE READING AFTER THE JUMP.

HOWARD:

6:  Was quick off his line and closed out crosses on the few opportunities he had - didn't have any real chances to distinguish himself otherwise.  (Jared)

6:  Didn't really have much to do.  (Evan)

5:  Guadeloupe rarely got past the backline and had no idea where the goal was when it did, so Howard did not have much to do.  His distribution left a little to be desired, though.  (mwc)

CHERUNDOLO:

8:  Keeping attackers at bay, providing width, playing in dangerous crosses - honestly, when was the last time Cherundolo failed to put in an all-around positive shift in a US shirt?  (Jared)

7:  Provided excellent service down the right side and was a constant threat throughout the game.  (Evan)

6:  Solid in defense and provided some dangerous balls on offense.  (mwc)

BOCANEGRA:

6:  A typical Bocanegra shift - stout defensively, poor in distribution. I'm not sure Boca still needs to be a constant fixture in the XI.  (Jared)

6:  Struggled with distribution, but didn't get beat once.  (Evan)

6:  Did his job defensively, but his offensive limitations were on display again.  If the USMNT is going to continue to rely on the wing backs to provide the width on offense, it needs someone else on the wing.  (mwc)

GOODSON:

7:  Continued to show off his improved composure and was, per usual, a menace on set pieces even if he didn't get a header on frame.  (Jared)

5:  Did well, except for a challenge that could have been a foul and maybe even a red card.  (Evan)

6:  Outside of the mess he and Bradley made on Guadeloupe's first corner, he did his job.  Another referee may have called him for a foul just outside the box that could have hurt.  (mwc)

LICHAJ:

6.5:  The young wingback provided much-needed width and pace down the left flank - something Bocanegra doesn't - but more dangerous sides would have taken advantage of some positioning mistakes. Still, I think he deserves another look at left back.  (Jared)

7:  Showed quickness and the ability to run at defenders, more than can be said for any left back we have ever had.  (Evan)

5:  Good to see him get a game and he brings a lot to the table, including a Delap type throw-in, but Guadeloupe was just not good enough to make him pay for three big mistakes.  (mwc)

DONOVAN:

7.5:  Much, much better from the US number 10, not 2010-level, but far more dangerous and influential than his performance against Panama.  (Jared)

5:  He was too passive, but he didn't really do anything poorly, either.  (Evan)

7:  Donovan played a lot of good balls tonight, but he did miss a close chance I would expect him to bury.  (mwc)

DEMPSEY:

7:  Dempsey continued to be the US' most dangerous attacker - on another night, he would've had a hat trick. Marks off for doping around on that sitter, though.  (Jared)

4:  Created many chances, but it didn't matter because he didn't finish them. Tonight wasn't his night.  (Evan)

3:  Yes, I said it.  3.  A couple of near miss free kicks does not make up for holding the ball too long, poor distribution, and botching four, FOUR, fantastic chances.  He is my favorite Nat, but he was poor tonight.  (mwc)

BRADLEY (subbed off 85'):

8.5:  That trademark work rate that has earned Bradley his international reputation was on full display, but his ventures up into the attack were what made this a fantastic performance.  His pinpoint, decisive passing created several dangerous opportunities for the Yanks.  (Jared)

8:  Man of the match.  He controlled the midfield and very rarely gave away possession. He switched the attack with ease on many occasions.  (Evan)

7:  Ran several miles.  Passed well.  Clogged the middle.  An all-around solid effort.  I don't get the nepotism bit.  (mwc)

JONES:

8:  This was, I thought, Jermany's best performance in a US shirt, as his field switching, pass-linking prowess was matched by his destroying abilities for the first time with his national team.  (Jared)

6:  Had an average night, some nice tackles and passes but wasn't dominant.  (Evan)

8:  He won every ball that was even remotely near him.  Good to see his long passing skills make a return.  (mwc)

ALTIDORE (subbed off 78'):

9:  His strike for the lone US goal was world class, and his work rate, physicality, decision-making and movement off the ball was as good as I ever remember seeing it.  (Jared)

7.5:  Scored a banger and held up the ball well. He also drew a lot of fouls.  (Evan)

8:  Yes, his first touch is still terrible, but he got a goal, ran all over the place, and tracked back on defense, again.  I hope this trend continues.  (mwc)

WONDOLOWSKI (subbed off 64'):

6.5:  Wondo wasn't spectacular, and he missed another solid chance to find the back of the net, but his movement created loads of space for Altidore.  Looks the better option than Agudelo based on current form.  (Jared)

4:  Had some decent touches, but failed to be clinical in front of the net. He isn't on the field for his speed, strength or passing -- he should be putting away these chances.  (Evan)

5:  Not a bad night.  He worked hard and had a couple of nice touches, but he looked awfully slow and he needs to get the ball off his foot quicker in the box.  (mwc)

BEDOYA (subbed on 64'):

8:  Did everything you could possibly want from an attacking sub - nearly had a few goals and gave Dempsey the sitter Deuce pissed away with a great run into the box.  (Jared)

6:  Added life to the game, but didn't make a stamp on it.  (Evan)

6:  Good try on his late header and set up Dempsey for what looked to be a certain goal.  (mwc)

KLJESTAN (subbed on 78'):

6.5:  Sacha's attacking-third movement continues to create space for his teammates, and his decision-making truly is much improved and more decisive.  (Jared)

6:  Looked really good on the ball, but wasn't given a long enough time to make a huge impact.  (Evan)

5:  Made some good touches, including the pass to get Dempsey his last chance on goal.  I am not sold on him, but he did okay.  (mwc)

EDU (subbed on 85'):

5:  Was brought in to preserve the lead, so you can't really blame him for failing to capitalize on an out-numbered Guadeloupe during a few late US counter-attacks - still, he didn't offer much in his few minutes.  (Jared)
---:  Didn't play long enough.  (Evan)

---:  Not enough time to warrant a rating.  (mwc)
